Artist Phil Hansen is a resourceful guy.

He ‘paints’ in a variety of unexpected styles using everything from typography to used matches, peanut butter and jelly, wooden slats and dandelions to create portraits and homages to Jimi Hendrix, Mother Theresa, Bruce Lee, Che Guevara and others, including (above) da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, rendered in burger grease.

Lots more of Phil’s work here.

London-based street artist Alexander Farto (fnarr) aka Vhils (oh, right) makes incredible 3-D layered portraits by painting, etching and chipping away the surface of walls.

And he doesn’t stop at walls. He also applies his considerable skill to metal, wood, billboards, you name it. You can see a full gallery of his many works here.

Leaf art: painstakingly detailed hand carvings done on actual leaves using tiny little knives to remove the surface of the leaf without disturbing the veins.

More examples on display in the promotional piece, Nature’s Art. Also this:

‘Leaf-carvings are exceeding all expectations in popularity. Carved from an actual leaf which has been dried and cured, leaf-carvings come in various subject matter. ‘Amazing’, ‘beautiful’ are the words first heard from our customers who purchased one of these’.

Not ‘terrifying’, ‘kitsch’ or ‘witchcraft’, then?
