What you may need to know:

1. It’s the new film by Alexander Payne, who did About Schmidt (2002), Sideways (2004) and The Descendents (2011).

2. It stars Will ‘McGruber’ Forte, a bit of a comedy genius who did a film in Kerry last year  and starred in our favorite music video of 2013.

3.
It also stars the great Bruce Dern. Now that’s what we call a ’70s movie bad-ass.

4. How bad-ass? Dern once killed John Wayne, in The Cowboys (1972). He shot him in the back.

5. He got the part in Nebraska because Gene Hackman wouldn’t come out of retirement.

6. The film also stars Stacy Keach and Bob ‘Better Call Saul’ Odenkirk. That’s right, this movie has THE GREATEST CAST EVER.

7.
We do love a black and white flick.

What you may need to know:

1. It’s Rocky Vs. Raging Bull. For laughs.

2. A decade ago, Sly Stallone was officially over. Then he did Rocky Balboa (2006), Rambo (2008) and The Expendables flicks. Now he’s fundraising for indie flicks on Kickstarter.

3. Bobby De just turned 70. Fingers crossed for that late-career renaissance. We’re not holding our breath, mind.

4. Did they forget to add ‘From the director of Anger Management (2003) and Nutty Professor 2′ (2002)?

5. Alan Arkin turns up in what can only be described as ‘the Alan Arkin role’.

6. Who’s Kevin Hart? He’s popular enough to headline at Madison Square Garden.

7. Prognosis: Stallone’s first (intentional) comedy since Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot? (1992)  We haven’t been this excited since Analyse That (2002).

prisoners

What you may need to know

1. Be honest: you wouldn’t necessarily expect too much from a thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman

2. That said, the reviews from Toronto, where it just premiered, suggest that it might be the best movie of the year.

3. Gyllenhaal has given the Hollywood pretty boy thing a try, but it all went a bit Prince Of Persia. He’ll always be Donnie Darko (2001) to us.

4. We do like Paul Dano, from Little Miss Sunshine (2009) and There Will Be Blood (2007), and those big mad -sad eyes of his.

5.
From what we hear, Prisoners goes FULL dark. We do like that.

Release Date: September 20

What you may need to know

1. Another TV trailer – I know, right?

2. Stephen Merchant got his own comedy vehicle, minus writing partner Ricky Gervais.

3. Hello Ladies was created by Merchant and the dudes who created the US version of The Office.

4. Truth be told, Merchant has been stealing the show since Extras.

5. That said, his movie career hasn’t exactly taken off – remember Hall Pass (2011)? Tooth Fairy (2010)? I Give It A Year (2013)? Us neither.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: Where’s Ricky?

Screening Date: Autumn

What you may (or may not) need to know:

1. Why even bother with movie trailers anymore?

2. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are best buds in real life.

3. Now they’re bad-ass TV cops.

4. It’s a HBO mini-series.

5. The idea being that each series features different protagonists.

6. What’s the tune? Whispering, by Alex Clare.

7. Harrelson is rocking an awesome wig. McConaughey is naked. What’s not to love.

8. Broadsheet Prognosis: Your new favourite TV show.

Broadcast date: January 2014

What you may need to know:

1. It’s possibly the most superfluous remake since that shot-for-shot Psycho.

2. That said, it’s not half bad.

3. Who’s Robocop? Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman, from the US version of The Killing. He nearly got the Mad Max gig, but Tom Hardy bagged that one.

4. Sam Jackson, Gary Oldman and Michael Keaton? We’re amazed there’s any scenery left. NB: Michael Keaton needs to work more.

5. No, we don’t get a Peter Weller cameo.

6. Actually, just watch the original again. It’s a pulp masterpiece.

Release Date: 2014

What you may need to know.

1. It’s a new RTÉ comedy series.

3. One of them is Rosanna Davison’s brother-in-law (to be). Not only that, his dad is Dr. Quirkey.

4. The series co-stars proper comedy legend Rik Mayall. Seriously.

5. Relax. The show challenges stereotypes, as opposed to reinforcing them.

6. The Big Question: Is this the next big Irish comedy sensation?

Broadcast Date: Next Monday

What you may need to know

1. This teaser is short, and pretty messed up. We like it.

2. It’s the first film in nine years by Jonathan Glazer, who did Sexy Beast (2000).

3. His follow-up, Birth (2004), got a bit of a kicking, hence the nine year break. It’s worth a gander.

4. Oh, he made the GREATEST GUINNESS AD OF THEM ALL to boot.

5. Scarlett Johansson In Scotland. That is all.

6. Reviews have been mixed, to say the least.

7. Best YouTube comment: ‘i have the weirdest boner right now’.
