Free this weekend?

If you’re a lover of Americana, the only place to be is at the Kilkenny Roots Festival.

Now in its 22nd year, this fiesta of alt.folk, alt.country and alt.genres in between sees dozens of The Marble City’s bars and venues given over to top-quality live music.

This year’s headliners include The Delines (Portland,Oregon-based country-soul par excellence); The Sadies (Canadian roots-rock veterans); Alejandro Escvodeo (deeply soulful hombre from Texas); and Patty Griffin (Grammy-winning singer/songwriter from Maine).

Psychedelic Pill – a kick-ass Neil Young tribute band – are one of the star attractions of The Smithwicks Music Trail, which offers free live music all over the city.

The man who makes it all happen is local publican John Cleere, who can be heard discussing the A-Z of the festival on the SoundCloud link (above).

Nick says: For one weekend a year, Kilkenny lives the Americana dream.
