Thomas Street, Dublin, 1968.

Sisters, pals or vintage clothing business partners?

Where are they now?

The National Library would love to hear from you.

UPDATE: The BBC has apparently  solved the mystery. “The sister of one of the girls, Margaret Collins, posted a message to say that it was Elizabeth Collins and Angela Arnold,” it reports. More as we get it.

Answer: quite a bit.

February 27, 1904.

From the National Library of Ireland:

Think this may the photographic definition of a fine body of men, and there is some mighty moustache waxing in evidence here too. This is a group of sergeants (don’t know the collective term, but would like to hear your ideas!) at the Cavalry Barracks in Waterford.  Any guesses (educated or otherwise) on whether the gentleman who may be Sergeant Murray in this 1909 photo from the same barracks is in this group?

A young Marian Finucane and Gemma Hussey. Two Unknown youngsters.

And a goat.

From the National Library Of Ireland:

This photo was taken some time in 1964. Two girls feeding a goat that has been chained up to graze on the banks of the Grand Canal at Mespil Road in Dublin (between Baggot Street and Leeson Street Bridges). Surely a sight that you would not see today.

Damn early D4 hipsters.

February 24, 1914.

From the National Library of Ireland:

These are the crew members of a Norwegian vessel, who survived what is known as the Fethard Lifeboat Disaster. These men were on board their vessel, The Mexico (with its cargo of South American mahogany), when it ran aground on the Keeragh Islands, Co. Wexford, on Friday, 20 February 1914. The Fethard Lifeboat that came to their rescue through a storm was destroyed with the loss of 9 of the 14 lifeboatmen. Not sure where this photo was taken – somewhere in Wexford or Waterford presumably, so please tell us if you know…

From the National Library of Ireland:

Policemen outside the court where an Official Secrets Act case was being heard, apparently passing the time playing with a pistol. The case, which was something of a cause célèbre at the time involved members of the army. We could really do with more information on this one..

From the National Library of Ireland:

As an antidote to Valentine’s Day [week] cynicism, here are Major Bishop of the National Army and his bride [on Saturday, May 24, 1924]. This photo is one of the smiliest (technical term) wedding photos we have in our collections.
