Young Hearts Run Free’s annual Christmas shindig happens this Saturday. There’s a large lineup including Dónal Lunny & Paddy Glackin, The Spook Of The Thirteenth Lock, Withered Hand, Jet Setter, The Jimmy Cake, Temper-Mental MissElayneous, Groom, Brigid Power Ryce, Floor Staff, Tandem Felix, Slow Skies and a special performance of Christmas Hearts – a song for Christmas, in aid of the Peter McVerry Trust featuring members of So Cow, Villagers, Fight Like Apes and Bouts. All proceeds go towards Simon Community.

Friday October 31st – Halloween Night: Discotekken Halloween Bash @ The Sugar Club, Leeson Street, Dublin (€16, 9pm)

If you’re going to get dressed up for Halloween you may as well do it in a place which the performers will be too. Discotekken’s Samhain soirée features a band called Shift covering 80s hits and wearing tight trousers and big wigs, a screening of Spinal Tap, a scary amount of DJs from Kaboogie to Handsome Paddy to The Record Spot, Damn Fine screenprints, a hip-hop bake sale (A$AP rocky road /Danny Brownies) and Gruel Guerilla’s Eurotacos….

“Young Hearts Run Free have been putting on fine music and literary events in alternative spaces for a few years now and this weekend, they’re putting on a mini-festival in venues like Marsh’s Library, National Concert Hall, Bello Bar and Molloy & Dowling’s that will include music, talks, lectures, DJ sets, musical trails and more.

Bill Drummond will be giving a lecture, Pat Collins will be discussing his film work, John Osborne will perform John Peel’s Shed, there will be music from Katie Kim and Adrian Crawley among others and comedy from Foil, Arms and Hog. Have a look at the schedule  and make your own choice. As ever all proceeds go to the Simon Community.”

“Flaming June Records presents a music festival over two days in the old fire station in Rathmines, now an arts space. 30 indie, rock and folk-focused bands play over two days including The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock, Nanu Nanu, Idiot Songs Twinkranes, Paddy Hanna, Elastic Sleep and more. Rathmines barbershop hosts an acoustic shack and Arbutus Yarns will be showing videos. All artists are getting paid for their involvement in support of the Pay To Play campaign.

Before that, Josh Leary was making some unique ambient electronic music with hip-hop samples, so the support MssingNo, whose wobbly tune XE2 last year sampled R Kelly is a nice fit.
