Mumblin’ Deaf Ro, The Lie-Ins, The Prairie Dogs @ The Cobblestone, King Street, Dublin 7 (€TBC, 9pm)

Nialler9 writes:

It was heartening to see one of my favourite Irish songwriters Mumblin’ Deaf Ro get a Choice Music Prize nomination earlier this year for his album Dictionary Crimes, a collection of songs about family and what it’s like to be in one.
Ronan Hession’s lyrics avoid cliché and stick to plain beautiful truths. He doesn’t play many gigs and The Cobblestone in Smithfield is a genuinely intimate place to see his band with support from Lie-Ins and Prairie Dogs.

Nialler9’s Gig Guide June 4-10

-1Strange Passion: SM Corporation, Chant Chant Chant!, Choice @ The Grand Social, Liffey Street, Dublin. €12/€10, 8pm

Nialler9 writes:

Before Forbidden Fruit festival’s lineup in the grounds of IMMA with Chic, Primal Scream, Four Tet, James Blake happens at the weekend, there’s an opportunity to see three bands from the early ’80s come out of retirement.
Darren McCreesh‘s Strange Passion compilation released last year on Finders Keeps explored the post-punk music that happened in Ireland from 1980 – 83 with extensive liner notes and great once-neglected tunes.
Friday’s gig in the Grand Social will be the first time in around 30 years that three bands featured on the compilation: Chant Chant Chant!, SM Corporation and Choice will play live.
And when you’re finished there head on over to the Button Factory [Curved Street, Temple Bar] for the disco-themed Nialler9 Forbidden Fruit Opening party with Gramme, Ships and TR One.

posterSkinny Wolves: Angel Olsen, Lisa O’Neill, Bill Blood @ Whelan’s, Camden Street, Dublin (€10)

Nialler9 writes:

Ignoring the multi-venue festivals like Camden Crawl Dublin and The Beatyard, Thursday night’s Whelan’s gig with Chicago folk singer and Bonnie “Prince” Billy band member Angel Olsen is a single good bet. Olsen has a voice that combines a breathy country-blues vibrato with an off-kilter folk style. Support from Lisa O’Neill and Bill Blood.

-2Chelsea Wolfe @ The Sugar Club, Leeson Street, Dublin (€12, Wednesday)

Nialler9 writes:

There are lots of great gigs on this week including Egyptian Lover, Solar Bears and Trocaire Live’s event with Donal Dineen but Chelsea Wolfe’s show in the Sugar Club [Leeson Street] gets the edge. It’s the live Irish debut from a gothic singer who released the haunting acoustic album Unknown Rooms last year. The LA-based singer also makes dirgey industrial songs and The Sugar Club show will feature both strands of music from this unique visually-orientated performer.

rsdRecord Store Day.

It comes around so fast.

Nialler9 writes:

This Saturday is Record Store Day where an emphasis is placed on the remaining physical spaces where people can buy music. While some people say RSD is about exploiting music fans’ desires for limited edition vinyl, it’s really about the people and the community around record shops.
Saturday will see loads of events taking place across the country with bands and DJs playing Tower Records, Elastic Witch, All City and Freebird in Dublin, Bell,Wingnut in Limerick and Galway, Rollercoaster in Kilkenny and more. Bands like Windings, Tieranniesaur, Squarehead, little xs for eyes, Jennifer Evans, The Hot Sprockets and The Twilight Sad are playing. All events are free so wander around the record shops for the day.

Saturday: Dancing Suns: Nina Hynes @ Peppercanister Church (€15)

Nialler9 writes:

Dancing Suns is a collaboration with Irish musician Nina Hynes and her fellah Fabien Leseure with the help of Sean Carpio. The Goldmine album launched this Saturday is ambitious in scale and a brilliant record. It features sweeping orchestral arrangements and songs that wouldn’t sound it of place in an alternative soundtrack for The Wizard Of Oz. The Peppercanister gig will bring the album to life in a once-off live set featuring 16 musicians.

-1The Magician @Mother Club, Arlington Hotel / Copper Alley, Dublin

Nialler9 writes:

One good thing about the Trinity Ball being on Friday is that there are loads of international artists playing extra shows in Dublin this weekend. Mother will be a benefactor on Saturday with Belgian DJ The Magician, specialising in disco, electro and synth-pop, headlining  – a great fit for this old-school basement gay club.
As Donal Dineen showed with his set on Saturday night, Mother is where you go to dance the night away.

€12, 11pm.

Young Hearts Run Free: Easter Rising: Alasdair Roberts, Peadar Ó’Riada, Mossy Nolan @ The Fumbally Cafe (€15)

Nialler9 writes:

Young Hearts Run Free events typically take place in non-traditional venues like churches, galleries and the Co-op so The Fumbally Cafe is a perfect place for their Easter Sunday night’s proceedings which lean towards trad and folk.
On the lineup is Scottish folk singer Alasdair Roberts, Paedar Ó’Riada (son of Seán), and the under-rated Dublin modern folk musician Mossy Nolan and a screening of the Shimmy Marcus film Hannah Cohen’s Holy Communion (2012). All proceeds go to the Simon Community.

gigSkinny Wolves/Bodytonic present: Holly Herndon @ Twisted Pepper (€12/€10)

Nialler9 sez:

Both Villagers gigs in the Olympia are sold out this week so try something completely different in the form of san Francisco electronic artist Holly Herndon.
A composer and studious musician (she is doing a doctoral study in Electronic Music at Stanford University),Herndon has a love of techno and experimental sounds, the combination of both can be heard on her debut album Movements.
This gig will either be madder than a bag of cats or a night of avant-garde sonically-rich dance music. Support comes from two experimental leaning local acts; Simon Bird and Catscars.

Le Galaxie, Ships, Sleep Thieves, White Collar Boy, Acid Future @ Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin (€15, 9pm).

Nialler9 writes:

If you have to go out on Paddy’s Day you may as well end up enjoying what’s good about Ireland. This lineup of homegrown dance and electronic acts represent the new wave of dancefloor-oriented live acts happening here with Le Galaxie leading the charge with fists full of glowsticks ready to banish the sensitive singer-songwriters out of Ireland.
