Wednesday: Lee Fields & The Expressions @ The Sugar Club, Leeson Street Lower, Dublin (€25)

Nialler9 writes:

As an alternative to Knockanstockan Festival in Blessington this weekend where the general consensus is that the atmosphere is great but the music quality is patchy, try a real “pure, gut-bucket soul singer” in the form of Lee Fields & His Expressions. Originally a soul singer in the ’70s, Fields was rediscovered and released his debut album in 2009. His performance is of the classic sweaty soul man variety.

-1Thursday: Grizzly Bear, Matthew E. White @ Iveagh Gardens, Dublin (€33.50. 6:30pm)

Nialler 9 writes:

Iveagh Gardens is host to a bunch of gigs at the moment and Grizzly Bear would be my pick of the gigs there this week.

The New York-based band now have four albums of intricate indie-rock songs to draw from since they played a sold out Vicar Street in 2009. Support from Virginia groove rocker Matthew E. White.

halvesSaturday July 13th: Halves, Overhead the Albatross, Bantum @ Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin (€10).

Nialler9 writes:

There’s a lot of outdoor gig activity this week in Phoenix Park and Iveagh Gardens but for something a bit more affordable, try the launch of Boa Howl, the second album from experimental Dublin band Halves, a band known for their rich instrumentation and detailed arrangements that fall somewhere between the sounds of latter-day Radiohead, Efterklang and Grizzly Bear. Listen to the album on State.ie here.
Support from six-piece instrumental rockers Overhead The Albatross and Cork electronic producer Bantum.

-1The xx, Mount Kimbie, Jagwar Ma @ The O2, Dublin (€35) – tomorrow Wednesday.

Nialler9 writes:

An early influx of Glastonbury-bound bands means this week’s gig guide is front-loaded. So if you’re not Stone Circle-bound or heading to the Cork Marquee gigs, the xx’s gig on Wednesday is the best overall lineup of the week with the superb Mount Kimbie and Jagwar Ma on support. It might be a bit weird in the O2 though.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, there’s Youbloom, a random festival supported by Bob Geldof of largely unknown acts playing around the city from Friday to Sunday.
