The American R&B trio King were chosen by none other than Prince to open for him a few of years back.

Their R&B music, as heard on their self-titled debut album in January is dreamy and soulful of soft synthesizer tones, drum pads, smudged horn sounds, handclap cloudy chords, digital bass and the girls’ lulling tones.

In a nod to the man who helped the band, there is a screening of Purple Rain (1984) beforehand.

Tonight’s show features a pop-leaning lineup of new Irish music including Wexford’s Basciville and Mary Black’s daughter Róisín O and a set from English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin. As ever all proceeds go to the Simon Community.

The first in a series of gigs run by The Generator Hostel in Smithfield of emerging Irish talent features a very good lineup of exactly that. There’s dance pop music form Daithí, alternative/indie from Beach, cheeky funk pop from Katie Laffan and electronica from Cut Once. Tickets are free you just need to register.

Already an established guitarist with a discography on respected US independent labels, Dubliner Cian Nugent‘s third album Night Fiction features a new instrument, his voice; and songs now share the alternative blues and rock vibes of artists like Kurt Vile and a country-leaning David Kitt featuring the expressive guitar playing he’s made his name with. Friday is the launch of the album. Support from Al McKay (Dick Diver), Bad Sea & DJ Daniel Fox (Girl Band).

As part of First Fortnight, the mental health-focused festival that happens in the first two weeks of January every year, a night of music, poetry and performance under the name Therapy Sessions has been lined up this Friday. Curated by Dublin duo We Cut Corners, it will feature music from rising “atmosfolk” band Saint Sister (Gemma Doherty and Morgan MacIntyre, top and performing ‘Virtual Hate’ on the Two Tube above), singer-songwriter Jennifer Evans along with poetry from Dee Campbell, South London spoken word artist Molly Case and Ryan Mangan.
