The sixth edition of Whelan’s Ones To Watch festival returns to inject some life into the Irish live music scene in January with 60 new Irish bands playing live across 4 nights. Highlights include Monster Monster, Bitch Falcon, Katie Laffan, Third Smoke, Rosa Nutty, Elm, Joni, Aine Cahill, Contour and more to be announced. It’s a fiver in on any given night or a tenner for four nights, with a free drink either way.

Another ‘important showcase’ which only exceeds in highlighting the unwillingness of established promoters and venues to pay bands for playing (and bringing in punters while doing so). Exposure, Hot Press, blah blah but at the end of the day it’s a cash cow for the venue that does little for the bands taking part bar lightening their purse (travel, food, rehearsal spaces etc.).
The first company that can successfully design a car that will run on crap beer will have the eternal gratitude and business of Irish indie bands.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I really feel for the bands and djs in this city. No need for it, Whelan’s are hugely successful.
Bodytonic are the same. Free labor at every turn. That’s why they’re so successful. At the end of the day though it doesn’t carry them much favor within the industry, whether they know it or not.
