Stolen City – The Tower

In the mood for anthemic pop with a big heart?

Then let me introduce Dublin trio Stolen City. Singer Sean McGrath is joined by guitarist David McCabe and drummer Ian Bailey on their rousing new single.

The video is by Ciaran O’Donnell.

According to the band,

“The Tower was written as a letter by lead singer Sean to his girlfriend Amy to explain that no matter what she has, or will go through in life, that he will be there to help her through it.

With addiction & violence occurring in the home when she was a child, it has had a knock-on affect in her later life leading to PTSD and depression.

“Stolen City hope that this song shows people that no matter what’s going on in their lives or the lives of others close to them that there is always a reason to carry on and someone there to help you through those hard times.”

Amen to that.

Nick says: Tower of strength.

D Cullen The Rising Tide

O he does like to be beside the seaside…

Dubliner Darragh Cullen (top) is a 25-year-old singer/songwriter who is adept at crafting epic windswept ballads tailor-made for radio playlists.

The Rising Tide is the title track of Darragh’s new EP, which was produced by Boo Hewerdine. The video was directed by Ian Whelan.

Darragh says:

“I live near a lovely little beach in Shankill, Dublin, and The Rising Tide’s lyrics came from an evening walk down there when the sea was particularly wild. I wrote the lyrics then and there and quickly ran home to put some music to it.

“We ended up filming the music video on that very same beach, about 2 and a half years after writing the song, so we got a lovely full circle moment out of it!”

D Cullen plays Upstairs at Whelan’s, Dublin, on March 28.

Nick says: A shore thing.

Join Me In The PinesFeels So Heavy

It came from outer space…

Bell X1‘s Dave Geraghty (top) loves a bit of homegrown retro sci-fi as he delves deep into the Irish Film Institute’s archives for his new Join Me In The Pines video which features clips from County Down filmmaker Roy Spence‘s 1975 feature Keep Watching The Skies.

Dave says:

“I was attending a documentary film festival as I had scored the music for one of the shorts. As part of the programme, there was a documentary about Roy and his film work. Upon seeing this, a light-bulb went on in my head. Roy’s pictures and my music could work brilliantly together. So, I edited his twenty-minute film into a narrative that works beautifully with ‘Feels So Heavy’.”

The result is vintage Irish sci-fi soundtracked by Dave’s funkadelic soul. Nice.

The song can be found on the album Monomania. The single launch is in Bloody Mary’s in Dublin on February 29.
