i don’t know what’s scarier – anto, or the fact his employers do not care for punctuation.

      Shoplifters Please.
Note it is our policy not to call.
The Garda Anto will deal with you.

Unless Anto is a slender Vietnameese woman who is willingly working in a brothel and specialises in punishment beetings for shoplifters with her cat of nine tails, then yes, this is a rape joke.

I remember my first punishment beeting. You’d think a radish couldn’t do much damage but I was in bits after.

Depends how you look at it, sure in that scene it’s an offer of sex for money (albeit relatively little money) not rape, but throughout the film there is a very clear analogy between guns and penises e.g. “this is my rifle this is my gun”. In the beginning of first section of the film Joker expresses a desire to kill, in the beginning of the second he expresses a desire to have sex, in the final scene he achieves his metamorphosis into a killer/f***er devoid of humanity by shooting a woman/girl not unlike the prostitute who approaches him in that scene.

The prostitute and soldier are analogous, neither, with their humanity intact, would do what they do of their own free will, some fundamental humanity must be stripped away before they can do so. You could argue that process of what the machine of war does to people could be viewed as a kind of rape (it’s something more than a violence, it is not just something that is done to you, it is also something taken away).

            @casey

Depends on your definition of ‘willingly’, for example in Thailand Bangkok pimps will often travel to the Northern Hill Tribes (very poorly educated) and offer to rent a girl for a year for about $200, that girl will than spend the next year in a sordid room in Bangkok in a state of perpetual insomnia thanks to the yaba pills she’s been fed. When the year’s up, that same girl will be sent back to her tribe, still bombed out of her head (the tribes people will say it’s because she’s been away from the tree spirits) to recruit some of her fellow villagers, naive girls who are impressed with how she’s dressed in (relative) city finery and make up.

Point being, if you’re going to get on a moralistic high-horse, make sure the saddles secure first.

        Casey! Casey! You’re the divil!

No-one mentioned rape Casey (except you)

Rather Anto will engage in a meaningful, deeply personal and intimate relationship with you in legal exchange for a good, service or favour. A “girlfriend experience’ perhaps.

I think it’s against the law to hold someone against their will, so unless Anto plans on wishing well on your merry way, they’d be best off calling the guards.

He makes you fall in love with him then he breaks your heart. Compared to this a kicking seems favourable.

Excuse me for I have something in my eye.

Gosh, bet their faces are red. Inadvertently flirting with lawbreaking! They’ll never live this down!

          1. Anne

He’ll be meeting lots of new people in prison if any laws are broken while Anto is ‘dealing’ with you.. And that sign is not doing him any favours.

          2. WhoAreYa

Is it strictly speaking an offence to threaten personal injury – (though Anto hasn’t done that, he’s merely said he will negotiate with you)

I think it is an offense only to threaten someone with personal injury if you want something in return, up to then it is free speech – depending on context of course, if it is a big man who is threatening a slender person down a dark alley.

I don’t think dealing with someone in a well-lit, public space will necessarily be automatically construed as ‘intent to cause serious bodily harm’ but I stand to be corrected. Otherwise for example horseplay and shouldering, sledging etc on a pitch during a game would be an offence as well.

          3. Anne

he’s merely said he will negotiate with you
Eh, where do you see that?

The sign says Anto will deal with you.
Regardless of a well lit, public space, if you do not desire to be ‘dealt’ with by Anto, and you are held against your will, Anto might well find himself facing a conviction.

Thanks jungleman – that is what I am trying to ascertain

What is the legal definition (was too lazy to look it up)?

I saw nothing about being held against one’s will Anne.

But I agree that to reasonable people it appears an implied threat.

The question is when does a threat have to be more than implied to be actionable? Or does it just have to be an ‘apprehension’ as jungleman says? If so how do you prove it? A ‘reasonable person’ test?

        1. All the good ones fly south for winter

There are no laws in the love jungle Anne, take heed and thread carefully.
