Head of Communications and corporate services at Irish Water, Elizabeth Arnett spoke to Seán O’Rourke earlier, after reporter Brian O’Connell told how residents of Limerick’s north side have been informed that they may not be able to drink their tap water for up to a year.

Hang on, fourteen years?

Oddly enough some of your country cousins have been paying for water/bins long before your cosmopolitan cousins.

Anyone know where I can see or hear about where on the north side they’re talking about? Could be my chance to get out of the ice bucket thing.

So far it seems to be confined to Ballynanty, Kileely, and The Island. Don’t know about Moyross, but that would have 70s infrastucture so no lead pipes likely. Haven’t heard of any problems in Caherdavin, Thomondgate, Farranshone & Mayorstone, etc.

A few years ago, when Limerick City Council took over the north side suburbs from Clare Co. Co., a friend of mine was working on contract to them as a Civil engineer. 48 hours after the take-over, most of Caherdavin lost water supply. As he’d been responsible for planning volumes and pressures, he was called in by the boss for a spanking. Turned out that over the years Clare hadn’t bothered finding & fixing leaks – all they ever did was to turn up the volume at the pumping stations, masking the creaking infrastructure. Took months and a lot of money to sort that mess out.

will the ordinary punters have to pay water charges in these areas? I should hope not. Who wants to pay for a dodgy product that could give you a bad dose of the shquirts!
