Claire Grady on the day of her appointment as first female editor of the Irish Independent, August 12, 2013
Editor of the Irish Independent, and former Editor of The Herald, Claire Grady has announced that she has decided to step down from her role and is leaving INM with immediate effect.
Anyone?

Update:
….Although the motion passed by the Independent Newspapers’ NUJ chapel does not formally express disapproval at her enforced departure, it “notes” Grady’s “resignation… with disappointment”.
The warmth of their backing for Grady implies that they are upset at her being required to leave after just one year as editor.
Two people familiar with the situation at the Indo say that Grady was never allowed to edit as she would have wished due to interference by the editor-in-chief, Stephen Rae. “He made her life hell,” said one.
Some of the staff resent attempts by the management of Independent News & Media (INM) to scapegoat her for the paper’s drop in circulation.

I’m surprised by this. She is considered extremely competent. she was Stephen Rae’s deputy ed in the Herald and then took over as editor from him when moved to the indo and when he became group ed.she took over from him as editor of the indo. I wonder what she did to piss him off.
Could it be as simple as the drop in sales? It’s down into five figures now.
sales are dropping all over and have been for a long time now so I doubt it. hopefully she had a better offer somewhere. I like her personally (although she did commission something from me once and never ran it).
Is payment conditional on printing? Genuinely curious.
Generally yes. no publication, no fee. On the indo group online invoice form you are asked for publication date. you can ask for a “spike fee” but I never bothered. There was always the hope that she would run it eventually – it was an opinion piece on a topic and the inspiration for the story died a little and never re-surfaced.
And I thought that I was asking a silly question, my first assumption was that if you are commissioned to write something, you would get paid on delivery… that can make freelance writers’ lives quite difficult.
Stephen Rae is kind of cuddly with the Gardai, isn’t he? Isn’t he the one who sacked Gemma O’Doherty for being a journalist? He likes to say “it’s just business” when he fires people. It is Stephen, it’s just business.
He is indeed very pally with the nGardai. Definitely a sense of déjà vu about this story.
Why does my stomach churn when I think about Denis O’Brien.
Good gut instinct!
She probably got sick of all the near death videos from China that they litter their website with.
TeeVeePee awaits
I presume the typo is intentional Bodger…. this being about the Indo like. …”first women”
God bless tipp-ex :)
She’s a decent woman. I knew she wouldn’t last in that snake pit.
Agreed. She has integrity. Shame that she had to leave, but I understand, the vileness at the core of that company has to be seen to be believed.
A nexus impenetrable Irish nonsense. A man shown by a Tribunal to be involved in political corruption is running most of the media outlets in the country…it’s like berlusconi sans bunga
Why do you think it’s “sans bunga”?
good question..
Hoping for the sake of my mental health…
The Indo is a misogynistic hell hole. She’s well out of it.
This is true but it still stinks. They obviously want the likes of Niamh Horan to represent women’s views.
