If you want to see a GP,
And you’re old or young it will be free,
But of course I must say,
That you’ll still have to pay,
The doctor a nominal fee.

This is a good idea. People don’t give any value to something (waste collection, piped water, GP visits) and abuse it if its completely free. Even a nominal charge should ease the multiple pointless visits by certain patients that every GP knows.
I agree. If top-tier-profiteering wasn’t such a burning ambition in this country it would work across many services.
Except that “nominal” payments have a way of sneaking up and up until they’re less nominal. And who are these “people” who abuse free stuff? A few do, most don’t.
Old people who are unfortunately a bit lonely would absolutely abuse free GP visits.
I’m working and I’m earning a reasonable amount, but I think twice (or more) before going to see my GP because it will probably cost me the guts of €100 (between the GP and a prescription). If it were free I would go a lot more, and get stuff I don’t need.
So I would agree that there should be some ‘pain’ for anyone going to the GP.But this fee should be capped as a small percentage of dole/pension/children’s allowance.
when is the under 5 rule actually coming into effect? My 14mnth old has been sick quite a few times since the decision but I’ve been out a few 100euro I just can’t afford. I can’t afford to get sick these.
