Perhaps his point is that being proud of your sexuality is like being proud of something like your nationality. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it’s not really an achievement to be proud of. It’s just what you are.

Tell me that when kids aren’t being beaten up and mocked for being perceived to be gay and when I have full equality under the law.

You personally might have no problem with LGBT people but there are many out there who are struggling to come out because they are ashamed.

      Visibility matters a great deal.

Agreed it should be like your eye colour or height, but it ain’t. And speaking personally, when I was like 12 or 13 it really mattered for me to see older guys and gals saying they were proud to be the same as me, when I was feeling ashamed. That’s why it’s important, for now anyway.

He’s not the leader of the FG group any more as he lost his council seat in the last local election.

I don’t think this luminary is married or has a (female) partner. Perhaps a case of the lady doth protest too much? There is something rather strange about Tormey – something that doesn’t add up.

Sorry to destroy your little fantasy there Jord but Bill’s married.

      To a female.

There’s lots strange about Bill though. I’m confused as to how he can have actively campaigned against the Seanad referendum but still be a FG member.

The mind boggles! He’s certainly politically all over the place – well, he’s somewhat chaotic (to put it mildly) in relation to a lot of areas. A nuisance to Fine Gael by all accounts who have never been that anxious to see him in the Dáil not that there is any fear of that. It’s not the first time he has revealed his, shall we say, shortcomings. Some have suspected him of being Opus Dei but I can’t imagine even they would want such a buffoon in their ranks. Maybe Lucinda might want him?

All single men are gay, its a well known fact.

broadsheet, pushing the boundaries of tolerance one comment at a time.

Who are you, Breda O’Brien? Certainly not all single men are gay but when one looks at some of those spearheading the anti same-sex marriage drive, amazing how many confirmed bachelors there are. There is certainly one particular politician who elicits much in the way of laughter and oh, please dear but that’s admittedly from those of us in the cheap seats. The Cardinal Keith O’Brien style hypocrisy is certainly not an isolated case.

Gah. I knew immediately it would be this clown. He’s been scourging Dublin North West for the worst part of 25 years.

“Bill Tormey is fascinated by people and interested in lifestyles.”

Tell me more is his attitude.

    1. Mick Flavin

Is he he a genuine eccentric contrarian or does he ham it up, Caroline? Either way, it’s only when he’s on your side that you have to worry. He’ll damage any cause/side of an argument by dint of his manner.

      1. Caroline

I don’t think his contrarian credentials extend beyond being a mid-life (typically) male who’s gotten the hump because modern politics is now prioritising someone else’s concerns.

He’s always jumped from party to party and to independent, but he seems to have become increasingly odd.

    2. Jordofthejungle

This is certainly the impression one gets from Fine Gael personnel in the area. Tormey is considered nothing more than a cretinous busybody and about as intellectual and academic as Westboro Baptist Church’s PR person. More to be pitied than scorned.

I wonder did he ever apologise to David Walsh after that Late Late Show hatchet job him and Gay Byrne did on David on behalf of Stephen Roche. Gas/anger-inducing watching it now.
