Modern Catholicism

How many of us think about our moral code, the set of values and beliefs that we live by. I Heard of a parent recently who sent the child to a Catholic school and then insisted that the child should have nothing to do with with Communion, Confirmation, Prayers or religious activities. So much for the rights of the child! As a nation we have a very ambivalent attitude to morals and values. On the one hand we espouse predominantly Christian beliefs and yet on the other hand, we act in very unchristian ways. There is plenty of evidence that we actually follow the premise of “do as I say not as I do “ when it comes to giving moral direction to children and teenagers. Sadly many parents have become detached from the religious significance of the sacraments and so the focus switches to the secular aspects, purchase of Communion clothes, family celebration (bouncing castles), who to invite and how much money do I give as a present ( to be continued next week).

What a load of horses**t. Most of the secular people I know live better moral lives then most of the so called good Catholics that I know. Do you really need a book full of magic and sky fairies to define your morality, because if you do you are in big trouble. Religion and spirituality are just tools weak minded people use to explain their lives instead of marvelling at the randomness of the universe.

My point being, whilst I agree with what you’re saying, is that you’ve missed the point. This wasn’t the time or place to tell people of religion how stupid they are for believing what they believe. There’s never really a time or place for that, and you should know that if you’re over… say… 16. They think YOU’re stupid for not believing in god(s), and they’re as likely to convert you to their stance as you are to convert them to yours. ie not very.

The issue is a stupid, w@nkface priest talking nonsense. The issue is the obvious (but not to many) right of a child to be educated without religious indoctrination. The issue as that maybe your Ma, and certainly my Ma, goes to these places on a Sunday, reads this parish notes tripe, and probably nods along. They nod because they were indoctrinated heavily as children. Bringing us back to the point.

Aaaaawwh, we have to wait until next week before getting guidance on how much to give for Communion. Who the feck do they think they are, the scriptwriters for Corrie?

Someone said that last night on twitter and i said depression was a disease that can’t be cured by religion and the reply i got was “not worth responding too”.

This reminds me of the true story (see BBC link below) of the Tyrone priest who was giving a Powerpoint presentation in the parish home to a group of parents on Communion. Apparently, some gay porn images were thrown up, and the parents all looked at the priest, who “bolted” out of the room without saying anything.

When he returned 20 minutes later, not only did he not have an explanation, but he lectured the parents on why, instead of giving Communion presents to children, they should make a donation to the Church!

There’s a perfectly good excuse for this:
15 years ago, I met a young orphan. Both his parents had been killed in a bizarre accident That’s it – a tree fell on them. This young man had nothing to his name except a dream. His dream was to own his own stable, with prize-winning horses. But he was afflicted by a disease that affected his speech.
He could only communicate by raising his eyebrows – once for yes, twice for no. “If only I had a whistle “so I could train my horses to win the Grand National,” he thought….

Church-run schools are all state funded. Yet they want to dictate the religious views and practices of the pupils who attend them? Let the schools provide the education and let the churches provide the religion. This is, after all, a republic, and should provide an equally good education for Catholics, Protestants, Dissenters and any other children who need it.

This. Make all the schools non-denominational, except a handful of truly private Catholic and Protestant schools (where the fee payers pay the salaries of the employees etc, not the taxpayers), and see how little anyone misses all of this indoctrination stuff. Works really well in the states, or at least it used to until the (US) Republicans decided teachers were a bunch of overpaid freeloaders and tried to choke the life out of public schools.

JC (RIP) said a lot of good stuff. Perhaps someone in the Catholic Church should read it, start with the sermon on the mount lads. Dogma merchants

How deluded and out-of-touch is this the person who wrote this?

In terms of actually trying to make a coherent point it’s just woeful drivel.

What is even more amazing is that the church pulled in over €2k in their collection.

Between Sinn Fein and the church, there must be an insane number of the people who seem to have no real problem with organisations that facilitate/enable child abuse and the cover-up of the same.

They most likely think there’s a magic sky fairy reading their mind and watching us all when we fornicate… I’d call that seriously deluded.

Public schools should also be publically owned, not funded by the public as a gift to whichever sect of this apocalypse cult have the deeds.

Well the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church has been more than proven when it comes to their attitude towards children. This claptrap appears regularly in Parish Notes around the dioceses and it is nothing more than fodder for the flock.
Is the birth of a new BS section to supplement the newspapers, i.e. “De Parish Notes”??

Ah the bitter tears of a Catholic lamenting the missed opportunity to indoctrinate a child.

If children were asked to choose a religion only when they reached the age of reason, religion would be dead in a generation.

“I heard of a parent recently who sent the child to a Catholic school and then insisted that the child should have nothing to do with with… religious activities.”

Yes, like me, they probably had no choice but to send their child to a Catholic school. Believe me, some of us would rather we fully avoided your poisonous little institution and the whole charade that a lot of us have to go through for the sake of our kids.

Today’s Christian doesn’t think he needs God. He’s got his Hi Fi, his boob tube, and his instant pizza pie…

    1. Mario Balotelli

.. and perhaps thinks he can sidestep all the riches, gold, abuse, hypocrisy and bigotry and focus on a few simple words from his prophet of choice and live a fairly decent life anyway.

Judgement Day is upon us. I warned you the Lord wouldn’t stand for your minidresses and Beatle boots. But it’s not too late to repent your sins and be embraced by the Almighty…

Now lately the preacher character has been under attack. Now why is that? Well, I’ve been hearing some folks say that they think the preacher character is finished as a comedy vehicle; it’s worn out. They’re saying stuff like, “I don’t like that preacher character anymore, it’s been done, it’s passé. Get that old guy off my TV set. I don’t like that preacher character. Give us something new. That old preacher character don’t make me laugh anymore. That old preacher character don’t make me laugh anymore…” They’re saying that.

      1. Reverend Lovejoy

And who are these people- are they out there, are they the general TV audience? Are they fans or are they writers? Or are they critics: given to criticism. Because I think the time has never been more right, more propitious for the preacher character. All you gotta do is look down to the southern United States. You can see that televangelists and preachers are fast eclipsing rock and roll musicians as the drug-poppin,’ tax-weaselin,’ prostitute-pumpin’ bad boys of pop culture! It’s Bible-Belt Babylon down there! And they say, we don’t need that preacher character anymore. Well I say to people like that, I like my preacher character, it gives me the Now feeling.

Parish notes is the best place for this kind of garbage.

Considering the whole foundation of Christianity is founded on a completely immoral doctrine, it makes the above even more laughable and ironic.
