Ah here.

Context

Idir an dá linn….

Níl brón ar Gregory.

DUP MP Gregory Campbell has been barred from addressing the Northern Ireland Assembly for a day for failing to apologise for an Irish language parody. Mr Campbell told BBC Radio Ulster on Tuesday: “I have nothing to apologise for and I won’t be apologising.”

He said comments made against him were “absurd and ludicrous” and he would continue to act as he had done, so long as Sinn Féin persisted with using Irish as they did in the assembly.

“I exposed the fallacy and the nonsense of people who insist on using Irish to begin every single contribution, no matter what the topic is, when most people don’t understand what they’re saying.”

The easiest option would be for a Unionist to learn Irish and the Nationalists to learn Ulster Scots ….everyone then is seen to make an effort with each other. Simples…

    1. Kieran NYC

Nationalists already know Ulster Scots – it’s basically just English with a Norn Iron accent.

      1. mauriac

Hate to agree with this because its what English linguists used to say about Irish ach is sae oun da monae

As my mother might say to him: “I’ll curry YOUR yoghurt, you pup,”.
It made me laugh, I have to say.

    1. scottser

my ma resorts to ‘the face’, as in ‘i’ll curry your face for ya, ya little boll1x’ it gave me my love of turning nouns into verbs :)

He has a point. It’s not as if Stormont offers a translation service, and Sinn Fein members are equally, if not better, able to converse in English, so their use of Irish is both impractical and antagonistic.

      1. Ultach

Not just Shinners who speak Irish. Wonder what the reaction would be if Greggors had disparaged any other language? From previous BS posts gaelphobia seems to be acceptable and anyone calling it out gets all kind of abuse.

        1. Mikeyfex

Don’t let comment threads on broadsheet dictate to you what’s acceptable or not. If something is unacceptable to the more bullish of comment-leavers then we all hear about it. That’s how it works. Doesn’t make it final just cos the rest of us know not to bother countering.

To be clear I’m not just referring to Clampers on this subject. He’s a reasonable chap.

          1. Ultach

Yes, ignoring seethers does not equate agreeing with them. I should have writ: *Gaelphobia seems to be acceptable to quite a few commentators.

          2. Mikeyfex

Ha. I thought you weren’t getting sucked into this one?

Is what he said to me the last time I tried that.

        2. delacaravanio

Gaelphobia? Give me a break. Ta gaeilge líofa agam, but I wouldn’t speak it in a room where half the people in there didn’t have a notion what I was saying.

        3. delacaravanio

Also: “Not just Shinners who speak Irish” – true, but they’re the only ones who routinely do it in Stormont, and since that’s what the thread is about let’s keep the debate on topic.

          1. delacaravanio

Again, I’m not defending him, but he has a point. There’s a time and a place for everything.

        4. louislefronde

          Gaelphobia? That’s a new one!

Must submit that for inclusion to next year’s edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Gaelphobia, n. – Extreme aversion to Irish language enthusiasts who persist with the delusion they can convert a whole nation into speaking a dead language (and at the same time pay for the experience whether they like it or not!)

      1. Rotide

He doesn’t mean the use of Irish is impractical and antagonistic. Just the use of it in Stormont. Which is a perfectly valid point to make.

        1. Ultach

Yeah, it’s perfectly valid to have Irish free zones where the use of the language is banned. Also, can we ban the use of Dublin northsider accents in the Dáil because it just happens to rile some bigots? I mean, the use scanger lingo is just impractical and antagonistic and I’m sure northsiders are equally, if not better, able to converse in standard English, and the Dáil doesn’t offer a translation service for Langer.

          1. Ultach

@Rotide Are you trying to make a comparison between a language and an accent?
Going a bit ad absurdum to show how ridiculous it is to condone DUP anti-Irish bigotry by saying that the use of Irish at Stormont is impractical and antagonistic.

    1. scottser

delacaravino, that is absolute horse feathers. it’s not as if anyone delivers their full speeches as gaelige, just some members use short phrases addressing the chair of the house as a simple formality. campbell is making a d1ck of himself by turning this into an issue. besides i remember we all took the p1ss out of our anthem here a few months ago doing exactly the same thing – ‘shoving connie around the field’ and all that. it was a laff yesterday, he looks like a knob end today. let’s leave it at that please.

      1. delacaravanio

I’m not defending him for mocking the language, but I do agree with his sentiment. Whether Sinn Fein like it or not, most people in Stormont don’t speak Irish, nor do most people watching at home, so insisting in speaking in Irish, be it for ten seconds or ten minutes, is designed to exclude.

    2. inotherwords

Totally agree. Considering how divided communities are in the north, it would be nice if elected representatives focused on working together, rather than exaggerating their differences.

  4. rotide

Not a single complaint about calling us Mexicans?

Shame, they should have used the more traditional ‘wetback’.

    (I find both equally amusing)

      1. delacaravanio

Ha ha, yeah, I remember the first time I heard it: “We call yese Mexicans.” Ok, said I, why’s that? “Because yese call us Nordies, ” she replied. I shrugged my shoulders.

      2. AhHereLeaveItOut

Considering that Mexico is part of North America, then they, you and the others applauding this comment are pretty… dumb.

  5. Kieran NYC

At least being banned from Stormont will allow him to do his OTHER job in Westminster for at least one day this week.

Double-jobbing is nuts. And Sinn Fein MPs don’t even pretend to do theirs.

    1. Ultach

Loathe as I am to defend SF, they have phased out double jobbing I believe. Will appreciate any current examples if they haven’t yet done so.

      1. Kieran NYC

Maybe they’ve changed it and I just got mixed up with the fact they still don’t actually turn up and do their jobs.

  6. Clampers Outside!

    D. U. P.
If you take off the ‘P’, the one a the end there, and replace it with em, a ‘C’, and em, a ‘K’

    You get D. U. C. K.

    Brilliant.

I could do this all day, great craic.
