The River Lee in Cork above the Jack Lynch tunnel
Eoin English, in today’s Irish Examiner, reports:
Toll fears have emerged again following confirmation last night that the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork is to be ‘privatised’ within months in a deal believed to be worth up to €12m.
The management of the tunnel, which has been maintained by the city council since it opened to traffic in 1999, will be outsourced to Egis Road and Tunnel Operation Ireland (ERTO), the company which manages Dublin’s tolled Port Tunnel.

Yeah but once everything has been sold off, we don’t have to pay taxes, right?
Then who will pay the wages and pensions ? Thats only going to get more expensive …
sold down the river
Water over the bridge
Where are they going to put it? On the south side, I guess. it’s a very tight space, though, due to that exit into/out of Mahon.
I’d say it will be barrier free like the m50, crazy to do anything else
DUH. Of course.
So, who’s going to start the “you don’t think you should get it for free, do ya?” speeches? After all tunnel maintenance doesn’t fall from the sky, etc, etc… References to the picture being taken from a helicopter also help.
They do a LOT of maintenance on that frickin’ tunnel. I wonder if it was that well built in the first place. They did some works on the Jazz weekend: remember that? Total gridlock (said like in Lilt ad).
Malibu ad actually

Thass the wan!
Malibu is rank.
There is no evidence that there is any tolls being introduced. All that has happened is the operation has been outsourced. Needless hype.
Jerry Buttimer was on Newstalk Lunch and he said that there are no plans to introduce tolls, and there never were.
This is all part of the ‘Dublin for Dubliners’ plan I’ve heard of. Cork people are too tight to pay the toll so they will just stay in Cork. Same way Cavan people won’t cross the M50. It stops cross breading and ensures the Dublin accents are not contaminated. True story.
Dat’ ‘breading is a naw’ful dose alright

There are other ways out of Cork apart from the tunnel. If you give me a tousand snots, I’ll tell you what they are.
You imply that only the people wanting leave would pay?
Ha! I didn’t mean to, but I think that’s fair.
I think everyone in Cork just needs to build a bridge and get over it.
The choice is pretty simple you leave it free and don’t build the northern bypass at a cost of €600m or you build the northern bypass out of the toll revenues on both sides of the Cork Ring Road.
That’s how it starts, then they end with two tolls.
Introducing taxes, charges and tolls is so easy. Removing them however once the costs have been ‘recouped’ just doesn’t happen. Look at the East Link in Dublin.
The M50 bridge cost £40million.
We have paid €2billion so far.
Just to be clear here, the EU has paid for the motorways and we have total c***s holding us to ransom at a few key points.
Any free marketeers care to explain these miracles?
1. Attempt at a Thatcher/Regan style privatisation 2. Corruption used to secure the private contract (sweet deal) 3. allegations of impropriety surface in awarding the contract to well-placed individuals. 4. 5-10 year tribunal into dealings surrounding the awarding of the contract 5. Re-nationalisation. The corrupt win, lawyers win, citizen loses.
… and all for the price of 4 tunnels.
Reaganomics FTW
If they fix the Dunkettle Interchange, then ok! Go for it.
