“You have made a very serious mistake here today. I think it is an historic day, as the minister said. Ye had an opportunity to listen, ye had an opportunity to step back and abolish the charges and Irish Water. You haven’t taken that opportunity. And the reality is, is that no one can govern against the will of the people. And you’ve lost the will  and the mandate of people and, honestly, your days are now numbered. And if you had any respect for yourself, you really should go to the people and call a general election because we’ve had to listen to a lot of waffle about democracy, from the Taoiseach over the weekend, aided and abetted by some of his friends in the media, trying to discredit a people’s movement, trying to insult people? That they would allow themselves to be led by a sinister fringe? Where was the coverage to the 200 women in Coolock who peacefully protested outside the [Garda] station last night?”

“Those who are undermining democracy are not in the communities, they’re sitting across the way there because ye went to the people. You said, ‘vote for Labour and we’ll save you from Fine Gael’s water charges’. Fine Gael said, ‘vote for us and we’ll never bring in a charge unless meters are in’. That’s not democracy, that is fraud. And you have betrayed the people of this country, you’ve succeeded in awakening a sleeping giant of the Irish people. And, do you know what, now that they’re awake, they actually like it and they’re not going back into their box. December the 10th will be absolutely enormous, in my opinion. I don’t think you’ll survive it, unless you cop on before that. But if you try and limp along, after that date, you will find that this charge will be absolutely uncollectable by the time you try and bring it in and collect that in April. But I strongly suspect that it’s not going to be your problem because you’ll probably be gone before then.”

United Left Alliance TD, Clare Daly in the Dáil yesterday, speaking during Leader’s Questions.

    Nothing to see here.

There is nothing lost in translation. Bodger, I’ll bet, stopped and started the video clip many times when transcribing it. The official transcript, I’ll bet, was taken in real time as the speaker spoke. Either that, or that is a speech she had prepared in advance and submitted for the record.

Either way, it reflects what she said.

My understanding that interfering with the public record is a criminal offence.

The public record, therefore, is the correct one, and not the transcription from the speech itself.

Speakers are supposed to address the Ceann Comhairle, not the Government. Hence the transcript says “The Government” not “you” which could be interpreted as the Ceann Comhairle.
Addressing the Government and not the Ceann Comhairle was why Mary Lou got thrown out the day of the budget: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7V30pFuejg

Incidentally, it wasn’t Seán Barrett in the hot seat yesterday but Michael P. Kitt the Leas Ceann Comhairle. I wonder would Seanie let Claire away with that?

A cursory Youtube visit would show he let’s everyone away with it. Sure Mehole Martin is always directly talking to Indeh.

The will of the people behind the Iron Curtain put an end to Deputy Daly’s totalitarian pinups (unless Lenin never mastered ‘true socialism’). I’ll take Ireland’s tattered polity any time.

she forgets to mention how SIPTU will make sure as f*ck that the leeches staffing this fraud of a utility company will get every cent and bonus.

    1. Owen Brady

SIPTU are an institution established to protect the people from oppression through the power of organisation, they are on the side of honest hardworking people, I strongly suspect the reason you are making this anti SIPTU comment is because you have been influenced by the pro establishment mainstream media which Claire Daly is referring to in her speech, I also noticed you didn’t put your real name on your comment which also says something about you.,

Oireachtas.ie never records an exact transcript of what is said, it’s always edited. At a minimum, they take out ums and aws and heckles and that sort of trivial noise; but this sort of rewriting isn’t uncommon either.

Ask KildareStreet.com about it sometime. They have some rather strong opinions on the Oireachtas transcripts service…

  7. Gers

Bodger wanted to be funny and probably a make a little mockery of C.Daly by using “Ye” ?

Besides, the transcripts on the Oireachtas.ie are never 100% accurate.

clare daly is such an inspiration to me the way she maintains her air of righteous indignation.

The thing that annoys me is, all these people like her telling them to scrap the charges all the time. So what happens if/when they are forced to scrap the charges? They just increase general income tax instead or just don’t reduce it next time as much as they were going to do. So instead of *everyone* contributing like this is supposed to make happen, instead it’s just the easy target PAYE workers again paying for everything. And the layabouts get their way and live off us once again for nothing. While their ringmasters get more votes and power to givve them more for nothing. Sick of paying for everything out of my wages while others are just on the take, take, take
