How can a price hike bring better value? T.V. is crap anyway so you are better off just leaving them and switching to free to air.

    1. munkifisht

Free to air and find an internet service that does the same thing for ye. The idea of broadcast TV should be dead.

It’s just another example of Orwellian Doublespeak. For example the ‘Conservation Grant’ for water which is, in fact, its exact opposite. Doublespeak is now the default position for anyone doing anything anywhere ever thanks to PR companies and spin doctors. And it makes me ‘so happy’ (see above).

    1. Rep

Mine went up by a tenner. Some peoples seem to have gone down. I have no idea how it has been calculated.

        1. Rep

nope. If it is a 10% increase, how are some peoples going down? And does that mean that Kill The Poor is paying a tenner?

          1. bob

Mine’s a tenner too… and I’m paying 60 at moment. I think it’s cos I’m on an old package and they want people to upgrade.

  2. Spud

You left out the bit where they are adding 20 additional stations and more homecall minutes!

20 more stations of absolute pap you couldn’t be bothered watching…

  3. Colin

Considering its an increase of €7, I’d imagine they are currently paying close to €70. Do people still pay that type of money for TV?

    1. Spud

      Yep.
Well, I do for a TV and BB package (includes phone, but I never use it. Didn’t even bother with handset).
Apparently I can ‘downgrade’ and pay €2 less for a way better package, and am entitled to do so because they want to change the contract.

      sweet

        1. spud

Signed up around 2 yrs ago for that package.
Paid 35 for first 4 months I think.
Basic tv package (not horizon) and 50 mb BB which has always been excellent.
Anything more than70 seems excessive I would have thought?

  4. Small Wonder

You lucky duck. Last year they put ours up without telling us! Needless to say, we are no longer with UPC

  5. Waffles

Ours is going up a whole 2 euro.
Which, they did bump my internet up from 100Mb to 120Mb so I’m not actually complaining.

      1. Waffles

        I did,
        There’s a marked improvement.

Obviously, not over WiFi – expecting full speeds over the WiFi band is silly.

      1. Clampers Outside!

I only discovered it and then they turned it off… :( …or at least until January’s end the site said.

Showbox is another I was introduced to over the Christmas, but I haven’t tried it yet….

        1. smoothlikemurphys

Showbox is excellent, especially if you use a tablet. Download all the shows you want and watch them offline later.

Don’t sweat it.You now have permission to leave their service without any punishment fees.

  7. DermoMIO

Lads the persons original image is showing up on the app with their account number on it. Since you blocked it out on one image I’m guessing you don’t want it showing

The bossman needs the money to pay for his new house. 28 mil.

“Castlemartin, the Co Kildare home and estate of the former billionaire Sir Anthony O’Reilly, is to be so sold to John Malone, the billionaire US businessman behind UPC-owned Liberty Global. The selling price, already agreed at close to €28 million, will be one of the highest figures achieved for a private Irish estate.”

I worked in a UPC call centre during the last price hike. May God have mercy on their souls.

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly

Haa! I enjoy scrapping with UPC. Useless fuppers. I might ring them now to complain just for the sake of it. The long wait when you call helps to boil up the aul blood.

        1. andyourpointiswhatexactly

Mine’s gone up by a fiver! Hooray! I’ll ring them tonight, before dinner, when I’m extra cranky.

Does any company offer a reliable Internet only package, been stung with this myself but have no interest in the Upc channels or phone line

      1. Drogg

Magnet is s**t of the highest order, i paid for their highest connection and the speed i got was lower then dial up so i told them i was not paying until they fixed it as it was unusable and everyone who lived in that house needed the internet for work. After two months of them doing nothing to fix it, they sent a bailiff round to my house to collect the money, so i explained the situation even showed him a speed test and told him i would be contacting my solicitor i soon heard from magnet that they where cancelling my contract.

        1. Drogg

And UPC does an internet only package thats what i have but i have sky for my TV. I was seriously thinking of moving my broadband to sky as there new tv and fibre package is €60 a month for both but i want to wait and see how people get on using it before i move.

          1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly

Interesting. €60 is great value and I’d finally get to see Sky Atlantic. I’ll keep my peepers peeled.
I’d miss channel 100 terribly, though. Mmmf.

          2. Drogg

Oh sky Atlantic is so fricking good HD crisp programming i especially like Richard E Grants hotel secrets besides the usual true detective and game o thrones.

        2. kevin Keegan

Can you explain the chain of events which let to bailiffs turning up.Sounds like scaremongering.

          1. Drogg

That was it they asked me to pay i said fix my internet every month they would send me a bill with an updated cost and i would reply by phoning or emailing telling them to fix my internet and i would pay then one evening when i got home from work a man dressed all in black called to the door and demanded that i pay the money. Now i am a pretty big guy and at the time lived in a house with a bunch of other dudes so we weren’t to intimidated so we explained the situation to the man and even showed him our correspondents and i explained this situation would warrant me contacting my solicitor which he was more then happy with and went on his way.

Vodafone is 45 euro a month for 100mb internet. No landline. I use saorview and download the rest and watch on TV.

  12. Nikkeboentje

A few years ago, my monthly payment with UPC increased. I telephoned them and said that I wanted to cancel everything and that I was no happy with the service provided compared to the price that I would have to pay. I was adamant that I wanted to cancel everything and after speaking to the initial customer services rep, I was put through to another person. I was offered an up grade on my broadband and a few other things if I stayed. The best part, they kept it at the old price.
I think most companies would prefer for you to stay and have departments that can make a deal with you. However, you must be prepared to bite the bullet and cancel the service on the off chance that no deal is offered.

    1. jeremy kyle

Yep, they always pass you through to the loyalty dept to try’n work out a deal. And if they don’t offer you anything well then you’re probably going to end up giving money to their competitor.

      1. Spaghetti Hoop

Yep! Goes for insurance companies too. If you generate a bit of conversation with these customer retention people they will offer you a good deal – they seem to have some wriggle room with pricing. The hard part is actually reaching a human on the phone. Best time to negotiate/sweet-talk is on a Friday at midday.

        1. Kieran NYC

When I worked in an insurance company, we had 16% wiggle room.
Always keep a calculator handy when talking on the phone.

  13. Pablo

    Mine has gone up €2

If anyone’s contract is expiring soon, ring them up and tell them you would like to know how to cancel. I did this last year, was put through to the loyalty dept. and ended up paying almost half of what I used to. There seems to be no logic to UPC’s pricing

    1. jeremy kyle

Actually doesn’t the fact the price is going up and they’re making changes to the contract give you 30s day to get out of it anyways? I thought that’s why they have to notify you?

        1. Pablo

I think they’re following the mindset of the banks when they introduced fees. They realise most people will just take the hit and not bother call for a relatively small amount.

          1. kevin Keegan

I think it’s the mindset of a lot of people.Direct debit goes up fractionally.Who’s the wiser.
