Splutter.
Using the latest data from the Central Statistics Office.
Out of work mapper Omar Sarhan writes:
I did another map based on all that drink driving data that was published in the Indo/Examiner before Christmas. So broadsheeters (is that a word?) might like it. Leitrim is either very law abiding or drivers are just good at not getting caught!
YOU decide.

So let me get this straight, you’re saying that counties with bigger populations – have a higher number of drivers.
This seems to be exactly what he’s saying. Also higher numbers of drivers mean higher numbers of drink/drug driving arrests.
Science!
Bitch!
Or perhaps he doesn’t get the idea of proportional rates?
Their drink and drug driving figures don’t vary much from the neighbouring counties if you take into account the differing numbers of licenses issued.
Completely confused here, if there’s 35k arrests in Dublin and let’s say 20k get a ban – then that’s roughly 200k driving bans in the last 10 years??? Anyone have those stats?
No, this is the figure for the whole 10 year period.
Look forward to the map of Broadsheet trolls.
But do all drink drivers have licences?
Good point !
You should also consider that many people are not currently resident in the county “on” their drivers licence. If really interested in proportional rates, a better baseline would be based on the number of cars registered for motor tax – which would have a more up-to-date county of residence.
Possibly an insensitive headline given events of the last 24 hours.
Leitrim is fairly empty…
That map’s not accurate. I know for a fact that there are definitely some people with driving licenses in Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone. Some of them may at some point also have been arrested.
they’ve not been arrested down here if what happens on the M1 is to be believed.
It’s based on CSO data. CSO data doesn’t cover the UK.
Not yet, OUR DAY WILL COME
Maybe “percentage of drug/drug arrests per amount of drivers licenses” in each county would fit on one map & be easier to read.
+1
You’re fairly handy at graphic design, Omar, but you need to learn more about statistics.
Produce a map that shows Garda numbers. Number of Drink and Drug driving offences is related to the policing of the roads in a county as much as it relates to numbers of drivers
I’ll look into it ☺️
Broadshyster
Not really worth talking about sheer numbers; how about number of driving licences/arrests per head of population?
Maps of population
Thanks for the comments.
This is the original news story I got my figures from. So if the data looks screwy take a look here: http://m.independent.ie/irish-news/special-reports/revealed-league-table-of-the-worst-counties-for-drink-driving-30858032.html – it’s the source.
There are a few caveats that I probably should of mentioned earlier:
1 – The number of licenses is counted based on the count of the license issued per county, we all know at least one Aisling driving in Dublin on a licensed issued in a rural home county.
I have no idea how they count our European brothers and sisters driving licenses.
2 – The arrest data is calculated by the Gardai, they add up all arrests per station in each county.
It is possible for a Garda to arrest someone outside his or her stations catchment area or county.
Take for example the case of Sean, his license is issued in Cork, but he lives in Dublin. On his way back from smoking opium at his cousin Peter’s house in Leitrim, he is arrested while driving erratically through Mullingar.
So the license is counted in Cork and his arrest is counted in Mullingar.
Because of these quirks I decided not to work out any rates because the numerator and denominator both have an inbuilt error, one that we have no way of estimating. I figured that working out rates would of compounded the quirks and not be wholly accurate.
Did Sean have his shoes off behind the wheel?
Just kidding. Fair response Omar. Keep these coming.
Your first mistake was reading the Irish Independent.
Can you do a map that shows the Indo’s problem pages and show how the racy sexy stories come from the culchies and the mundane I hate my job stories come from Dublin and Cork; then can you compare that with the number of scantily clad Indo “journalists”/”models” who write for the Indo talking about their job satisfaction and “important issues” such as skin cleanser; then can you show the proportion of people per population who care about Brendan O’Connor’s articles that say how he misses Katie French and hates people trading on her name? I think you will find some striking results.
That would be swell, thanks.
p.s. Sean is an alcoholic, it is insensitive to pick on him.
