The senator’s comments come ahead of [Conor] McGregor and fellow Irish fighter Cathal Pendred preparing for their respective bouts in Boston early on Monday morning.
A McGregor win could see a potential title fight in Dublin, possibly in Croke Park in front of 80,000 fans.

        Actually the pioneers of MMA in Ireland were mainly graduates. In the early days amongst the most active clubs were in TCD, Queens and UCD.

        There were and are a lot of professionals and graduates training.

        Not that it should matter really…?

        The sport has opened up a lot and there are people from all walks of live involved now – including working class people. Not met any travellers yet but given the success they’ve had in boxing I’m sure eventually they will cross over.

      martial arts form the oldest sports. the olympics is full of boxing, karate, shooting, throwing spears, archery etc. only knacker round here is you, jock.

    UFC is a great sport, combining the most effective parts of all the major disciplines of martial arts as well as boxing and traditional wrestling. By some twist of fate, one of the most talented athletes in this genre is Irish!

    But yea, some D-list political opportunist is offended by it so we should probably ban it immediately and pretend it never happened.

        Yes Jock. McGregor is a former CWFC Featherweight Champion and Lightweight Champion, which made him the first professional Irish fighter to hold titles in two separate divisions. Out of the 18 professional MMA fights hes been in hes won 16, 14 of which through knockout.

    She was on Tubs show this morning. She’s never seen a UFC fight. In fact, she knew next to nothing about it apart from what a friend had told her about the sport.
    She also said it’s banned in the majority of US states, which it’s not.

      Although this is an obvious troll, it does hit the nail on the head with regards to my biggest reservation about this sport.

      As far as the vast majority of sports fans are concerned, the sport is ‘ufc’ not mma. It’s run by a single commercial company and again, to the majority it’s run by one man. He decides who gets a go, who fights who etc. This is not how sports should be run.

      I’m obviously aware that there are other MMA organisations and yer man Dana doesn’t run the thing himself. But like it or not, UFC is the main show in town.

      Take the Darts for comparison. They run the sport for profit like UFC, there are other organisations but they are the big boys and they run their premierleague in a similar manner to UFC. However, their biggest product, the world championships is open to anyone who qualifies. That’s the big difference.

    I like McGregor’s schtick, to be honest, but what I like most of all about this is that he’s doing a passable impression of Mr Tayto holding up a packet of Taytos on the Tayto-packet design. Or those kids on the Tús na Gramadaí textbook. Visual regress ftw.

    UFC is a scumbag sport with virtually no rules so that really thick people can follow it.

    Fine Gael don’t like things that scumbags enjoy so that why Senator No One is trying to ban it.

    Although I hate Fine Gael with a passion, I hate scumbags more. And by scumbag, I mean aggressive uneducated uncultured knuckle draggers who intimidate and threaten others. F*ck them.

      Well, you’ve certainly shown you’re uneducated on the sport. So everyone who practises/watches martial arts is a scumbag? And you come across like 100 times more aggressive than anyone I know who is involved in the sport. Just because you don’t understand form or ability, there’s no need to call people who do appreciate it ‘thick’. Sounds like you’ve a major chip on your shoulder – maybe try some vigorous sport to burn up that extra energy. Can I recommend MMA?

    Did some of the Trolls above perhaps start an argument with the thin lightweight looking bearded dude with glasses in coppers one night only to find he was ripped and an MMA expert I wonder hence their hatred of them. I’m not a fan of arrogance hence not a fan of mcgregor but it may be his character and if he believes that much in himself I’ve no doubt he’ll go all the way.

    There are plenty of homegrown Irish so called sports involving innocent animals that had no choice in their participation that she should be getting angry about. Prob because her friends take part in em.

    The fighter aren’t forced into participating in the sports they decide to enter and train for it. Every physical sport has an element of risk even a sport as tame looking as golf.

      Fighting is our species most basic form of competition. When two footballers get over excited they fight. When two fighters get over excited they do not break into a game of football. It makes perfect sense to make a sport out of our most basic competition. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s stupid.

      I’ve trained (and competed) in martial arts for over 25 years and I can count on one hand the number of aggressive knuckle-draggers I’ve encountered in training during that time.

        i got to blue belt in karate when i was younger. to get any way decent at martial arts takes incredible dedication, discipline and skill. i’d suggest anyone who wants to knock it give it a go first.
