Scenes from the funeral of murdered father-of-nine Barney McGinley in Athlone. Up to 500 people attended the ceremony.
Mr McGinley was killed at a wedding in Co Fermanagh last week , the apparent victim of a feud between two traveller families.

I’m from Athlone and the McGinleys lived close by for a number of years.There was a phone box at the top of their driveway and while in 3rd / 4th class we used to ring their house phone, impersonate them, say terrible things and be all round total little shits. It took about two years before they figured out it was the phone box out the front. There was always two of us with one on look out. We were home hiding in the wardrobe before they made it to the phone box. Needless to say never did it again. It would have been 100% a moving town offense!
It’s surprising that a few days after the killing that neither Gardai nor PSNI can issue photographs of those wanted for questioning in connection with the killing. The PSNI are saying they believe they know who was responsible for the killing. Where’s the nationwide appeal with photographs?

Fair point, you rarely get it outside of Crimecall. That’s why I was chuckling at the Garda trumpeting their acquisition of EvoFit a few weeks back.

Though I’m pro-gun ownership, I think it’s good that we live (still) in a country where armed Gardai aren’t needed so often. I think broadsheet should cooperate and help to keep it this way.
