How was your night?

Miq writes:

I went to see Noel Gallagher last night [at the 3Arena, Dublin]. It was great, as you can expect. Following this, there was much talk about an aftershow party in the Grand Social featuring Noel’s brother Paul and Oasis founding member Bonehead both DJing. I went down and paid €8 to get in.

It was easily one of the worst DJ sets I have ever heard and was attended by many Pretty Green-clad fanboys all staring up to get a glimpse of “a Gallagher”. I’ve been to a few of these aftershow gigs. They all get big publicity (especially on the Internet). Not one ever lived up to expectation.Last night was the final straw.

Interpol aftershow recently featured [Interpol drummer] Sam Fogarino spinning some of the worst music I have ever heard. I didn’t know pretentious metal was a genre. The Paul Weller aftershow had about 5 people watch guitarist Steve Cradock play average songs without actually mixing them together off his laptop. I could go on.

Does anyone else ever go to these “(un)official aftershow DJ sets” only to find they’ve wasted their money on some rubbish?

Anyone?

Trying to be understanding here….but you paid for tickets to see Noel’s brother and Bonehead do a DJ set? Is it Noel’s gig that made this desirable? I don’t understand. I tried and everything. I would not go to this if you offered me €8

Roughly translates to “I did the stupid thing for the third time and it was stupid again.”

I went to see a Coen brothers movie. On the way home I decided to pay €2 to see a one-man play written by and starring lesser known brother Derek Coen. Turns out Derek’s work wasn’t very good.

Well, if you think that Noel Gallagher or any mongrel offshoot of Oasis is any good then your taste is terrible and you deserve what you get.

Noel Gallagher’s ‘other brother’ & Bonehead DJ set in a Dublin pub?!

I literally cannot believe that it was poo.

I don’t get why people go to these things. It’s like going out to a nice restaurant for a steak and then going to McDonalds for a burger on the way home. I know an idiot who went to see UB40 and then to the Grand Social for the after party. It featured a UB40 tribute band.
If I was the original poster I’d be embarrassed about the amount of times I’d been fooled into going to these things.

Or, in this case, it’s like going to KFC and then eating some old KFC from the bin on the way home.

You went to see the fat Gallagher brother who isn’t a musician and the guitarist deemed not talented enough to play rhythm guitar in Oasis. There are no breaches of the Trade Descriptions Act when that line-up turns out to be sh1t.
    €8… jesus.

She’d have reasonable grounds for complaint if they were incredible djs and put on a brilliant show.

I got into an after party for the Thrills for free once. It, along with the gig itself, was poo-ey, as was to be expected, but there was free beer, so the night wasn’t a complete waste.

Seems like a terrible disappointment, Miq. You expect to be entertained and you’re just left feeling a little unfulfilled and robbed. But hey, at least the rest of us now know not to submit a question to Broadsheet.

Thank you, I’m here all week.

    I seriously am.

Yup. Got what ya paid for I’m afraid. Dudder brudder hanging oft the fishtails of Noel’s parka.

Went to an aftershow DJ set just the once. It was ?uestlove from The Roots. It was brilliant, just like the gig.

The best part of last night’s after party, music wise, was the first hour, before Gallagher snr or Bonehead arrived.

You can’t begrudge people wanting to meet someone who played on two of the best albums going… you also can’t begrudge people dressing well!

“wanting to meet someone who played on two of the best albums going” – what would they be doing there?

Next time Prince comes to town, make sure you get your arse down to his aftershow. Saw him do a 90min live set with his full band in the Academy (then known as something else) in 2002 or 2003.

So, the OP recently went to an aftershow gig and found it was shite. Then went to another one and found it was shite. Then went to a THIRD one and found it was shite.

Is it sympathy you’re after or just LOLs? If it’s the latter, well done you. Mission accomplished.

Many years ago I was Fun Lovin’ Criminas the first time they played Dublin. They announced at the end of the show they were going to Doran’s after, and me and some friends went over. WE were standing around for a few hours putting up with local bands, the band hit the stage pretty late, but played for at least half an hour, and were pretty great.

Alternatively, my wife and I went to see CHVRCHES last year. They’d advertised an afteparty in Pygmalion. She was still excited and wanted to stay out so we went over. The music was utter shit, the crowd were pretntious wankers so we decided to write off the money we paid in and left after about 10 minutes.

If you sponsor mediocrity you get mediocrity. Noel Gallagher…. What an awful little man.

Went to the Morrissey after party in the Grand Social, now, it was free, but all they did was show ‘Morrissey: Live at the Hollywood Bowl’ on the big screen.
