A Design For Life

Further to this.

Students present their demands to Declan McGonagle, Director of the National College of Art and Design [NCAD] in Dublin.

The undergraduates complain of a shift in ideology by college management toward revenue-chasing that has left “students abandoned and alumni disillusioned about the value of their degrees and the future of contemporary art and design in Ireland.”

Fascinating. McGonagle handled it reasonably well, without knowing much about the background here. Why keep asking him questions if you are saying you’re not in the room for a debate? He’s basically acquiescing to their demands for a response but they’re resisting his cooperation.

How does the college have no board at the moment?

Cool diplomacy doesn’t mean that he hasn’t overseen and created these problems, don’t be fooled by someones demeanor.

Oh yeah, I’m making no comment on the root of the issue. Just the appearance of the protest.

I’m most confused about how NCAD have grown 75% over 3 years with huge restructuring without a board in place.

Irish Third level institute chasing revenue in order to compete internationally shock horror.

Read something earlier today about US colleges where it feel like graduation is: “and here’s your receipt, oops, I mean degree!”

Fair play to those students. The fact is many Art colleges in Ireland have started poaching potential students from each other by quickly introducing copy courses without the proven structure and years of experience behind them to make them work. They are doing this to raise profits. Its that simple. I’m shocked that NCAD have taken upon this strategy of mass profiteering without even a board to plan this massive undertaking of 75% increase in students. It stinks of Corruption. The students education is the least of their concerns.
    How very, very Irish

Well done all round. A good protest met with understanding and acceptance of concerns.

Graduated from NCAD 5 years ago and facilities and resources were at breaking point with the college population then, can’t possibly imagine where they’ve managed to fit a 75% increase in students!!

jaybs! is it 5 years already .. crikey. yea, i defo felt like i was just renting a desk when we were there. even with a normal amount of students the lecturers hardly gave us any time.

Fair play they have serious grievances and instead of shrugging their shoulders and leaving it to the next batch of students they are actually trying to do something. Attended a year night course a few years back in NCAD and the facilities where very poor.
