Yesterday.

The Sheraton Hotel, Gleeson Street, Athlone, Co Westmeath.

A Union of Students in Ireland annual congress group shot and heart-shaped hand gesturing in support of the May marriage referendum and the launch of a campaign to “clear the decks” for students to vote.

USI President Laura Harmon sez:

“Students are overwhelmingly in favour of Marriage Equality, and complacency is simply not an option for us. We’re calling for all colleges, where necessary, to change exam times on the 22nd of May to allow students to vote….”

FIGHT!

given the seemingly lax attitude toward setting a formal date for this motion and the huge demand over months for students to participate, I’d argue its essential that our students be given their opportunity to exercise their democratic vote. Shame on all if they dont!

Would you be saying the same if Iona were bussing pensioners to the ballots who might not ordinarly be able to get to the polling booth?

The polls will be open for 15 hours. Enough time for pretty much anyone to do anything and still cross the country twice to vote….If they really want to. I’ll be working and voting….not looking for a day off.

You most likely live, work and are registered in the same county or even area. Students aren’t.

But of course you knew that. You just chime in with contrarian stuff every time gay marriage comes up.

So 15 hours isn’t enough time to do a full day of work/study/exams….including travel and still cast an ‘oul vote. C’mon!

I’ll be working and voting too. So what? It’s not relevant to this issue. They are not asking for the day off, they are asking for the times to be adjusted. It’s not too much to ask. And quite frankly, anything that encourages people to get out and vote is welcome.

Exams are perhaps 2-3 hours long. Maybe even 4 hours. Even if you had 2 in one day on May 22nd, you’d still be able to travel home and vote. They are effectively asking for a day off.
