Last year I registered with my email address to get access to the [Dublin] Websummit Live Webcast. After the signup I got a “Thanks for applying for a Web Summit 2 for 1 tickets discount code” email. Yesterday I then got this (above)…. It looks like Websummit has used my email address to parse my twitter followers and cross reference it with their database of who had registered to watch the Live Webcast (pretending to be a 2 for 1 discount code). Confusing/Clever/Creepy…. you decide!
With no wifi, how is it even possible?

Jesus, if Paddy starts spamming my email inbox again this year I will end him.
I got the same mail with four people I follow on twitter mentioned. One of their names was the subject line of the mail. Totally creepy and unsolicited, I unsubscribed.
I really have little sympathy for anyone who forks out hundreds to attend. Go to a real tech conference.
Or better still, go to a free tech meetups which happen in Dublin all the time.

people attending a tech industry conference complaining about data mining?
um, you do know that’s what most of the success stories of the last decade are based on right?
It’s not a tech conference it’s a business conference.
Talking Bollocks Summit.
I think you’ll find that on in Leinster House most of the time
He clearly checked the box “I would like Web Summit to skim the personal data from my Twitter, Linked-In, and Facebook accounts to market the event to my rich and stupid acquaintances.”
No fan of the Paddy but this data mining is clearly outlined in their terms and conditions. On page 244 but it’s there. You sup with the Paddy, you get the spam emails
