My worst cinema experience of the year so far was running out of Minstrels before the trailers had ended
My best cinema experience of the year was finding more minstrels in my pocket during the title credits.

  2. serveandreturn

My best cinema experience is every time my expert craftsman’s hands combine Galaxy minstrels with popcorn in a corn-choc-corn sambo.

My worst? trying something new and going the pick and mix route for Avengers. Never try anything new.

  3. Davey T

Best cinema experience of the year so far- hilarious excitable guy behind me whooping and hollering at Avengers -first five minutes
Worst cinema experience of the year so far – excitable guy behind me whooping and hollering at Avengers- rest of film

  4. Niall

Patricks Day. It cleverly brought the current state of Irelands mental health service into the limelight all while creating a wonderful cinematic experience for the viewer.

  5. The Drivel Machine

The worst was going to a Halloween special at midnight and sitting infront of the smelliest man ever! Literally making me and my mates gag. The experience was made more bizarre by the witnessing of another attendee puke in the aisles as we were leaving. There was free punch.
The best was going to see a movie on Saturday at lunch time during a downpour with lattes and croissants, and emerging delighted and inspired to the sunshine!

  6. Tony Hayers

Going to see transformers last summer was my best. It was so bloody long I went in hungover and came out completely sober. Worst is/was when Liffey Valley Vue stopped the buttered popcorn, they’re MY arteries damn it.

My worst was while being on a date with a very beautiful Spanish lady. We went to see Avengers and about 40 minutes in I needed to go pee. Just as I was about to get up, she reached over and started to hold my hand. I was delighted about that but I now needed to choose between holding hands and going for a pee. I chose to stay put. We held hands for the rest of the movie(1 hour and 40 minutes). It was a very uncomfortable experience and I remember very little about the film due to the concentration levels required to keep myself dry.

My best was the Spanish lady holding my hand…ok, not quite. It was seeing ‘Interstallar’ in 70MM. IT WAS SO BIG AND LOUD! :)

My best cinema experience of the year was seeing Blade Runner on the big screen in the Lighthouse. Something I’ve wanted to do since I got it on a bootleg VHS in the 80s.

My worst cinema experience of the year was seeing A Most Violent Year in Omni. Not for the movie, which was pretty good, but because it was shown in a tiny screen with 36 seats. That’s not a real cinema at all!!

  9. Brenda

The worst cinema experience of my year so far was “Jupiter Ascending”. What a tremendous disappointment! My favourite was probably “Whiplash”! Great film, BUT MY NERVES!!!!! IN BITS!!!!!

  10. Oisin

My best cinema experience was getting a whole theatre to myself and a few friends at the end of a The Dark Knight’s run in the cinema.
My worst experience was an epic battle over the arm rests in a packed out Avengers screening. For almost 2 hours the battle raged on. Occasionally one of us would forget and drop defences where upon the other would immediately jump on the opportunity to gain the higher ground of the arm rest. Ultimately though, we both lost as this conflict clearly took precedence over the movie and lead to me having to see Avengers again (conflict free) to fully appreciate it.

My worst cinema experience so far this year was going to see a film that was due to start at 20:30, we were all set up popcorn, drink, minstrels and the clock started to tick, 20:35, blanck screen, 20:40, blank screen, 20:45, blank screen and then at 20:50 I decided to go out to the lobby (not to get some treats) but to ask why we were sitting in a cinema looking at nothing for twenty minutes after the listed start time. Their answer, THEY FORGOT TO TURN THE FILM ON. Well as I’m sure you can imagine there were quite a few angry customers. We didn’t even get a refund. A shamables.

Best cinema trip so far this year was two weeks ago to see The Avengers Age of Ultron. Great Film, Great Popcorn and comfy seats. It was as simple as that and sometimes it’s the simple things that are the best.

    Best – Blade Runner
Waited more years than is healthy to see the definitive cut of my favourite film in all its remastered glory on a screen that would do it justice. An almost spiritual experience that reminded even one as cynical as Gaff that nothing comes close to the proper cinema experience for works of art that do it justice. Being immersed in the characters, their environment and that otherworldly Vangelis soundtrack was an experience I’ll remember for some time. Here’s to supporting them so they can continue to indulge as wide a range of us as possible.

Worst – as I got caught up in recalling the above, any petty issues at other screenings such as mobile phones, noisy neighbours etc faded away like tears in rain. Bravo, Blade Runner; Bravo, local cinema!

  13. Bobojoc

Best was going to see a movie in a massive cinemaplex in Florida to find that once you were in you could roam from screen to screen at no extra cost although I’m pretty sure this was not strictly legal. Paid for one movie and watched three!

Worst was when I bunked off work early one afternoon to go and see Boogie Nights without knowing what the movie was actually about. Sitting alone, in a sparsely populated cinema, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon? That was the last time I went to the cinema ‘on spec’.

  14. fluffybiscuits

My worst experience was when i went to see the last Batman in your cinema, film was delayed by 40 mins, too warm, uncomfortable seats

Best experience? Little cinema in Austin Texas at some random film festival I came across years ago

    1. Kieran NYC

      Butt-Numb-A-Thon?

The crowd at Ain’t It Cool News run a (somewhat famous) festival each year in Austin.

  15. Clampers Outside!

Seeing as we’re not sticking to the “this year” rule….

Best… my early teen obsession with Kathleen Turner brought me to the cinema to see Romancing The Stone three or four times. I know… my eyes are rolling too.

Worst…. when the lads found out about my early teen obsession with Kathleen Turner and that it brought me to the cinema to see Romancing The Stone three or four times. I know… my eyes are rolling again too.

Worst cinema experience in last 12 months has to be the Swan Omniplex because: Terrible sound insulation – could hear Rathmines clock tower ringing, could hear the air-con, could hear other movies, could hear a loud engine going by outside (but this could have been another movie). Projector is a couple of degrees crooked. Edge seats sometimes results in speakers obstructing the screen a little. Talkative customers. OK, they can’t help the last one, but it’s a newly renovated cinema and they got so much wrong.

Best cinema experience in last 12 months: Interstellar at The Point Village Odeon. Seats are comfy. The big screen is great. Other cinema goers are a lot less talkative. You get a fixed parking rate. And there’s a parking & dinner deal with The Gibson Hotel I want to try out.

  17. Cohen Hand

My worst cinema experience was having to sit through 25 minutes of Inception.

My best experience was stepping out of the cinema, and taking in the cool night air, having left Inception at the 26 minute point – smug in the knowledge that my friends would be trapped there for another two hours and two minutes.

  18. Moira Cardiff

Jaws and The Towering Inferno showing in the same cineplex. Towering inferno blazing away on the big screen and a drunken voice from the audience shouts’when are we gonna see the bleedin shark’. Priceless

  19. Ray

    WORST:
Going with a girlfriend to see Cloverfield after having a potent bagel. The shaky camera work did not agree with her and she threw up in the seat about 30mins in. The smell was enough to make other goers wretch.
Not the best of times. Still can’t watch the movie without remembering the smell. *Shudder*

    BEST:
Seeing Jurassic Park on the big screen with my Mum when I was a kid. She fell asleep and woke up just before the T-Rex break out. It must’ve scared her silly. She hid behind me and screamed constantly. Oh the joys! :D

    Gimme tix!!!!!!! :D

  20. Declan

Best experience was seeing Fight Club as part of the Jameson Film Festival last year. the production wa amazing, from the actors on stage, to the food and the free drinks. My wife was heavily pregnant at the time and as part of the show, an actor on stage fires a gun. We almost had to leave as my wife thought the surprise caused by the loudness of the gunshot kicked off contractions.

Worst experience was at the premiere of Zonad. My friend and I didn’t enjoy the film and as it ended, I started to go through some of my (many) complaints with the movie. As we got up to leave, I noticed that several people sitting behind me was glaring at me. It transpired that they were involved in the production as extras and didn’t take too kindly to me rubbishing the movie in which they were proud to be involved.

  21. Willb

My BEST cinema experience was not strictly a cinema experience but a screening of Cinema Paradiso before the Ennio Morricone gig in Kilmainham a couple of years ago. Rained very heavily all day but kept warm by a fantastic movie.

My WORST experience was getting a call out of the blue from an ex to see if I wanted to go to a movie. I thought I was back in with a shout, I was NOT! The Green Mile is a long long movie.

    1. TheDude

There was a real IMAX in Dublin in the 90s. Didn’t make money so they shipped it up to Belfast. This was before IMAX was used in Hollywood features so it was mostly national geographic type docs

  22. Lauren McAuley

My worst experience was when I was a kid my grand dad brought me to the cinema and the fire alarms went off and because he was as deaf as a post he had no idea what was going on!

Best experience was when I saw Inception with my boyfriend- there wasn’t a lot of looking at the movie ;)

  23. Courtney Flynn

Best and Worst cinema going movie experience of the year was Fast & Furious 7.
Slightly more worst than best if I’m honest…

  24. rugbyfan

    BEST:
Theory of Everything….the film stayed in my mind for a few days.

WORST: The clown beside me who thought it would be great to facebook her mates sporadically throughout. Eventually I told her to turn it off or get the fupp out.
    We broke up soon afterwards.

  25. Cathal Gahan

WORST has to be ‘Into the Woods’-bloody awful singing rubbish!

BEST so far has to be Cinderella-bloody brilliant singing rubbish!

  26. Gardiner

My worse experience this year was going to the cinema with a friend (male) from work and sharing a large popcorn. As I rummaged tru the popcorn he had placed on his lap, I found a nasty sticky surprise.

My best experience this year was goin to the cinema and when I tried to buy a drink from the machine, which I had no change for, an old lady broke a dollar for me. U see senior citizens, although old and slow behind the wheel, can still serve a purpose

  27. phil

My best and worst are the same, at some movie yrs ago with a mate and his sister, my mate was holding popcorn and his sister having bought none kept dipping into his popcorn, just as there was an unexpected lull in the sound , he snapped at her ‘Look , look, you hold it so!’ the whole cinema burst into laughter and movie was ruined for most …

  28. Ray

Damn so far this YEar!???? doh
    okay okay.

BEST : The Avengers : Age of Ultron. Midnight screening. Was great to see it early before the US release and know it all! Plus the End Credit scene was amazing! Bring on the Infinity Wars!

Worst: Going to see Birdman. My friends all went in ahead of me while I stayed out getting snacks. Rushed back in to make the film in times. Got in and started climbing steps when I got a headrush. Fell backwards and spilled Coke and Popcorn all over myself. Decided to stick out the movie soaking and red-faced.

Now that deserves tix ….. L_L

  29. cupantae32

The best experience so far this year was definitely Ex Machina, which was excellent. Worst was definitely Into the Woods, which was incredibly dull!

  30. a

Worst ever, I know this won’t get me in the competition but I don’t care. Dude, Where’s My Car in a cinema in Cork. No exaggeration but I might as well have been watching a film in Busaras there was that much out loud chat, phone calls, shouting, eating, people getting up and walking around, people running from one screen to another, dirty screen, throwing things, drinking from cans etc. Left early obviously. Oh and of course the film was total s***.

  31. lemoneadi

    Best: Blade Runner Director’s Cut!

Worst: Also Blade runner, as I was very hungover.

  32. Conor

Worst: Puking during ‘Inception’ so I had to leave.

Best: Puking during ‘Couples Retreat’ so I got to leave.

  33. Joe the Lion

My best and worst cinema experience of the year is not having time to go to any movies at all because I am always writing on broadsheet, I mean my thesis.
Please let me free to be myself again

  34. Ima Soul

And Ireland is also on it’s way to being the fattest nation on earth ….. do they sell junk food while you watch, eyes open, mind hypnotised?

  35. caitseye

I’ve no best or worst cos I’ve not been to the cinema since seeing Good Will Hunting last August while 8 months pregnant. :-( I’m now living with my in-laws while my house is renovated and so have a built-in babysitters and would love to go have a best experience in the Odeon! :-)

  36. Tá Frilly Keane

Only time I’ve been ta’the flix this year
    Was Russell Brands docu pic
    And that was great
Said it all here at the time
But that stampede for the beer is definitely worth mentioning again
As it is my nom for best cinema experience

    No worse yet to report
Although the filling and what was left of the tooth under it that attached to the yellow bonbon at Nativity 3 last Christmas can’t be ignored.
Hey Dude D’mind yer donkey where’s me tooth

    Anyway if I win
Tis Pitch Perfect 2 for meself
And any one else that fancies a get’ta’gether

  37. Moo

Best: Catch me daddy – on a snowy Monday afternoon in March in one of the cosy comfy small screen of the IFI. There was wine. I watched a lot of it through my fingers but it was still a grand way to spend an afternoon.

Worst: Nightcrawler – left the movie not fancying my date or Jake Gyllenhall anymore. I waited a year for him to ask me out. He shushed me, loudly – during an ad for beer. Not cool.

    1. Joe the Lion

I’m not surprised your relationship with Jake didn’t work out. How about your date?

      1. Moo

It was a shocker. I could totally have totally made it work with Jake though – the less creepy Jake anyway. Thinking of inviting him if I win the tickets. Nervous but got a pretty good feeling about it.

  38. Ellie

Worst Cinema Experience: Just watching The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen probably qualifies for this category, but the guy that stood up half-way through the film, walked into the central aisle and promptly started to p*ss really made it special.

Best Cinema Experience: The entire cinema spontaneously humming the Star Wars theme tune during the opening credits of the ‘re-mastered’* theatrical release of the original trilogy.

Let’s not get into that debate. Please.

  39. Lauren McAuley

Best Experience: Going to Screen Unsceen and seeing Nightcrawler- it was fantastic and I thought the idea of a Screen Unseen was briiliant :D

Worst Experience: I’m absolutely scared of heights and I want to a certain cinema in Dublin city centre and I explained to them I find it very difficult to go up escalators so could I use the lift or the stairs (the screen was on the top floor). The guy behind the counter said it wasn’t a problem and to tell the security guard who was standing near the door. Went up to the security guard, explained to him that I bought the ticket and I could use the lift or stairs. To this he rudely said no way, that I should just close my eyes and use the escalator! I had to get the manager. In the end, i was allowed but when I came out of the movie the security guy rudely sneered at me! Needless to say I prefer going to Odeon than to this particular cinema :D

  40. Steve Humphreys

    Best Cinema Experience : “Chewie……..We’re home !”
Worst Cinema Experience : “Mesa called Jar-Jar Binks! ”

    That is all !

  41. mm

I went to see to see Todd Solondz’s Happiness with a date and we really got to know each other through a love of that movie……and when I suggested it to my friend (who I told that it was hilarious), he then watched it with his parents. He never forgave me. Some movies are great for sharing…err and some not!

  42. Prunty

My worst cinema going experience: sitting through Chappie, what utter nonsense. Terrible script, appallingly simplistic science fiction and worst of all a ridiculous vision of the future.

My best cinema going experience: that time when future me and my two mates, attend a future screening for free in the Odeon the additional bonus of free future munch. I love a good realistic vision of the future.

  43. DarraghNoob

My best experience has to be my first, Back to the Future II. The thrill of the big screen as a kid was awesome.
My worst has to be watching Gravity. 4 people around me got sick. Had to leave because of the smell of puke!

  44. janie

Best? a split between witnessing the absolute nerdgasm of a friend on seening the ‘Batman vs Superman’ trailer in IMAX, and the pure convulsions of laughter and audience participation in Savoy One for ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’
The worst would have to be having the first 30 or so minutes of Blade Runner ruined because the idiot behind me needed to keep swinging their leg into my chair ’cause they’re tall like, and the chairs were built for dwarves’.

  45. AhHereLeaveItOut

What’s with all the puking in cinemas?! I’ve been to a lot of movies in a lot of different cinemas, and never once seen someone chunder out a vomcano

  46. sharon mu

best experience hunger games went for daughters birthday expected to be bored stiff, was so entertained, will have to start listening to the young wans, worst went to a special pre-view screening of george clooney, the american, after a big build up intro by the distributors, every just walked out in silence, nil points!
