Emails get unmarked as unread if you read them.
The thing about having tonnes of unread emails and text messages is that these people don’t notice when a new one comes in.
Hence, when they look at their phone, they don’t see a new email or text message (unless they are keeping a mental note all the time of what the amount of unread ones was the last time they looked at their phone).
This is problematic if you are trying to contact them reasonably urgently and can’t call or they can’t take calls.
