I guess all these Libyans must be coming to Europe to personally thank Sarkozy for saving their country, I’m sure he’d be happy to put them up in whatever palace he’s currently living in, the big hero.

Serious well dones to the crew of LÉ Eithne (and people called it a waste of money, an island nation buying some naval vessels FFS!).

Great news, welcome aboard gang. Don’t mind the 11% EU unemployment you’ll find work soon and make a great contribution to our communities.

  3. Rob

Seriously this is a huge problem getting little or no press coverage about the consequences of all these migrants flooding into Europe!

      1. Rob

Hundreds of thousands of migrants descending into Europe by the way of people smugglers and ending up in squalid conditions scattered around Europe. To then be exploited by criminals here shunted from one place to the next precipitating the rise of the ultra right in many countries! The ghettoisation and separation of mixed ethnicities leading to social unrest! I didn’t say what they are fleeing from isn’t tragic I said their arrival will be catastrophic for Europe!

      2. Del McG

And an equally massive problem is that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of these poor souls dying at sea. But hey, don’t let humanity get in the way of your sub-Farage point, Rob!

Emigration to Europe won’t solve the problems in the countries these people are fleeing from. Beck’s demonstration, while colourful and dramatic, completely misses the point, it even fails to address the points of his own campaign to limit immigration to the US.

          2. Odis

Don’t know anything about his campaign or American immigration for that matter.
his video does however, demonstrate the scale of the problem mathematically.

I think total humans on the planet, at the moment 7 billion rising to 9 billion by 2050

Consider , the pope, has now made climate change alarmism, a religious doctrine Whilst completely failing to address, a major sticking point.

We need to live a simpler life, seemingly, but breeding like rabbits (though not so in Europe) is just what God recommends. to hell with, how the **** to you feed everyone! (presumably GM crops and a load of artificial fertilisers).
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Robert_Malthus

Malthus, still fairly prophetic after two hundred and odd years

Millions of immigrants live and work in the US. They pay taxes and contribute to their local economies and infrastructure, to domestic product and to exports. An amnesty is proposed to afford these people the rights and privileges enjoyed by the citizens they serve.
Roy Beck was, and NumbersUSA is, the acceptable face of the campaign to undermine this effort.

If he was honest in his stated efforts he would have campaigned for reform of trade and tariffs and an end to the political manipulation and military interventions that destabilises the governments and societies these people are fleeing.
His analogy of the teeming hordes of foreigners is crass and demonstrably false.

As I say I don’t know anything about the guy, but I’ve no doubt at some stage he’s courted the controversy you ascribe to him.

“If he was honest he would have campaigned for reform of trade and tariffs and an end to the political manipulation and military interventions that destabilises the governments and societies these people are fleeing”. – I see, just how the **** do you propose anyone does that? Talk about spreading yourself thin! It sounds like an upmarket Miss World speech.
He should “fight for wurld peace” – better looking people than him have failed so far. And I’m counting in, Ms. America here.

My point is that his illustration with the gum balls is a graphic illustration of the nature of the problem we face as a planet. If you say “His analogy of the teeming hordes of foreigners is crass and demonstrably false.” Can you direct me to the right figures? Because I got the above figures (the 7B and 9B) from Nick Cohen in the Guardian.

So our policies are meaningless and we must stand at the borders wringing our hands?
I’m busy today but will remember to discuss foreign policy with each candidate for the next election.

          6. dereviled

I note that you, as Malthus did, advocate population control for “others” whereas I am advocating self-determination and a stable society a the natural precursor to the measures proposed. Your reference to the Pope was hilarious in this regard.

          7. Joe the Lion

hopefully a decent oul plague or wave of pestilence will come along and wipe out the few unnecessary billion

          8. Odis

Just stick to the figures. Never mind self-determination and a stable society (is that something to do with horses btw?)

          9. dereviled

I would say that stability and self determination figure prominently for the unfortunate subjects of our light-hearted discussion.

          10. Odis

Undoubtedly they do. Its achieving the same, that seems to be beyond the wit of humanity.

    1. Smashmouth

      Little or no press coverage?

This has been the primary news story in Italy for the past few years and is getting more and more media attention each week in other EU countires

    2. rotide

This is getting little or no press coverage?

This has been headline news on TV and newspapers.

      1. Odis

I think what Rob means is that it’s hardly been debated in the newspapers, in this country.

  4. everybody

Its a joke the Irish Navy are out getting involved in this, they just want something to do to justify their existence.

    1. Rotide peed on my lock

Our Navy isn’t just about ‘defence’ and ‘attack’ and ‘war’.

But you knew that already…. ah you, you were only pretending to be a knob…

      *punches shoulder*
      ah you….

    2. St. John Smythe

We are a member of the EU, this is an EU-wide problem. I think all countries should have at least one navy rescue ship permanently there – and persue and integrated approach. This isn’t just an Italian and Greek problem

    1. Odis

      Might have been towed out.
I read that the German Navy was picking up people 10 miles off the Libyan coast last week.

  5. Orla

Those children are so young. I can’t imagine getting onto a dodgy raft with no safety equipment with those little tykes. Totally frightening scenario, those poor people.

    1. Joe

The fact that they are willing to do that proves how bad things are in their country but running from the problem isn’t the solution. The Irish didn’t run from our country when it was under British occupancy, we stood up for ourselves and fought for it back. I can’t imagine abandoning my home land like that.

          1. ABM's Bloodied Underwear

You need to read up on some history. There were ships fully laden with food leaving Ireland every day throughout the famine.
