Last night.

President Higgins and Sabina (fair play, in fairness) with President of the Federal Republic of Germany Joachim Gauck and his partner Daniela Schadt in Aras An Uachtarain for dinner on the first day of their State Visit to Ireland.

The gent in the portrait (top pic) anyone?

Yesterday: Gauck Wan

Amazing how they say that spouses start to look like each other the longer they’re together,
picture number 1 seems to support that theory.

Oh and the portrait is clearly of Ryan Tubridy

Champagne socialist is a political term originating in the United Kingdom. The phrase is used to describe self-identified socialists whose comfortable upper middle class lifestyles are perceived to be incompatible with their professed political convictions.

I don’t think the political convictions of Michael D Higgins can be questioned. A genuine socialist.

People’s political convictions should always be questioned.

He might be a socialist, but he’s also living in a mansion getting a spectacular paycheque at the expense of the taxpayer. That’s something that can be questioned, regardless of who the alternative is.

So you’d prefer a right-winger like Gallagher in there because it would ‘look’ to be a better fit?

The comment on here the other day was right – there’s a faction of the Left who’d prefer the world came crashing down than being anything less than 100% ideologically ‘pure’.

        no.
Im just pointing out the inherent hypocrisy of Labour.
He was the only choice in the election and i did vote for him but reluctantly.

But in the Áras he’s not supposed or allowed to be a Labour Party man. He’s supposed to be President of the whole country.

If Fianna Fáil’s guy started playing naked politics, you’d be rightly outraged.

I’ll never vote for Labour until this current lot are gone but… Michael D is a different breed to those turncoats. As a Labour minister he was excellent and having met him briefly over the years I’m very proud and reassured that this man represents Ireland.

Surely not taking pictures that make people look like they have candles growing out of their head is like, the first thing a wedding photographer learns?!?
