Expected this from tabloid rags, but utterly disgraceful front covers from The Times / Telegraph

      1. ABM

Hohoho. The dinosaur Irish media. Self-appointed guardians of Irish decency. Woman killed by a gun? Awful. Promote dangerous lifestyle habits that will kill 10000s from disease and cost taxpayers billions? Virtuous. Pictures of guys just before being butchered by Muslims? Fair game. Now if only they were hot and had a vagina, then it would be “below the belt”.

        No mention of:
        – the killer was racially motivated (black racists do not and cannot exist in the parallel universe)
        – the killer may have been on psychotropic drugs
        – Americans will have their right to protect themselves from these nutters taken away if geriatric gynocrats like Hilary Clinton manage to con the populace.

But no, let’s just focus on how pretty she was and how crimes against pretty blonde women will not be tolerated. Oh and demonise gun owners while the opportunity presents itself.

No ABM I think what people are horrified by is that the images are on the front pages of papers that will be at eye level for, say, kids to see. And I already mentioned that below.

And for the most part images such as ISIS related murders or some of the images released after the German plane crash should never be sensationalised and plastered all over the front pages of newspapers. It’s a simple matter of showing respect to the deceased.

We’re all giving out about the Times but Broadsheet reproduced their front page but not that of the Irish Times.

Particularly lovely isn’t it. Just in case you didn’t quite get what had happened. But then, its the Sun..

  2. Conor

WTF, the Sun…. a rag yes but jaysus to photoshop it as well??? What sick freak decides to do that and who approves it?!
And The Times too, absolutely shocking.

    1. Rafter

Sun is shocking but The Times didn’t shop it. It’s a still from the video, you saw that on camera as he filmed himself. But I’m in agreement, shopped or not, doesn’t belong in the paper, wish I’d not watched it.

Am I to understand that the images on the papers are not from the TV camera
but from the assailants own mobile phone ?

        1. Walter-Ego

It;s real, not photoshopped. It still doesn’t excuse the gutter press from putting those images up. Absolutely disgusting.

The amount of national British newspapers as opposed to regional papers has led to some nasty stuff in an effort to outdo each other.

Did Broadsheet really need to reproduce the front pages of the British rags that published the despicable photos of a woman being killed at a U.S. TV station today. Out of respect for her and her colleague and for all journalists who have been killed just for doing their jobs Broadsheet should have refrained. I’ve been a fan of this site since it started but I think this was a poor decision and I’m very disappointed that this has been put up on the site.

    Who cares?

    Cynicism is my default now.

America will always have guns and it appears mental illness is not going away.

Let’s not try to worry about their problems, we have our own.

It’s important people are faced with the harsh reality of this so that their outrage can be turned towards action. It is right that it’s shown.

  7. New Person A

What are we outraged about now?

The woman was shot live on TV
    – live action shot of the murder is entirely appropriate in conveying the essential facts of the story?

      1. dereviled

I would think TV footage would be appropriate, not stills from his personal collection.
But then I read the news on Wikipedia last night so I guess they have to compete somehow…

    1. St. John Smythe

so simply saying she was shot live on tv would not communicate that fact without an image?

      1. Spaghetti Hoop

The image is news. The fact that the gunman recorded his actions is news. if you’re any way interested in gun law reform in the US this image is very powerful and significant.

        1. dereviled

… and then I remember the amount of stills from beheadings we have seen with scarcely a whisper.
          And drone strike footage…

      2. Dόn Pídgéόní

No, no. You need the exact moment she realised she was going to die splashed on newspapers around the world because its news right? Add a muzzle flash for extra effect.

I agree with distaste at the cover shots BUT not looking at something doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen – a key part of this crime is the pre miditated way the killer involved various forms of media – the live broadcast, twitter & facebook posts and aove all else the filming of the act. It can be argued that it is in the public interest to show that. Admittedly the Sun went about 1,000,000 miles too far.

However I have a massive problem with front covers showing 2 kids grieving for their father – I understand it was a high profile custody case but the custody issue has been settled – leave the kids alone now please.
