Anything Good In The Examiner?

Ann-Marie writes:

Uplift members delivered Enda Kenny a message in today’s Irish Examiner by crowdfunding (in 24 hours) this full-page ad. The message reads:

The worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War is unfolding before our eyes. 37,477 people have added their signature to a petition calling on Enda Kenny to significantly increase the number of refugees to be welcomed to Ireland. As a community we have the opportunity to show leadership. 14,926 beds have already been pledged. All we need is the government to play their part and match the people’s leadership.

While today’s announcement is a move in the right direction, the government are still a long way off matching the solidarity of the Irish public.

Relax folks. Just as soon as soon as politicians work out a way to use this crisis to enrich themselves and their mates, the refugees will be welcomed.

85% of journal comments and green thumbs indicate fairly clearly that something has changed in the last 4 months. You need to pay attention to the numbers jo

cant believe how many have beds to give … as bad as i feel for refugees, i wouldnt have a complete stranger livin in my gaff. there’ll be all sorts of stories down the line about this. good and bad. itll make for some great radio talk show pieces. at first i was thinkin, sure some of them will be hot no doubt.. but ya dont see any women in the photos of them. its all men. then i was thinkin, happy days for the women so .. but then i remembered, dont muslims by their religion, not allow themselves dip into other religions? so there’d be no mixin? anyone know what the craic is there like? i think theylll like it here, and i dont think they’ll blow up buildings or have a go at us. even the ISIS ones. sure i hear we’ve a hundred or so ISIS heads here already. no much of a point to prove in blowin up stuff here, maybe the guinness storehouse or somethin full of americans. i dunno. unlikely tho, if they were guna do anything theyd give london a go.

They’ll hardly be having a fry-up for breakfast or a glass of wine with dinner. I’d be terrified to be on either end of the refugee-host equation.

While 2 thirds of the country wont & will not pay for a corrupt privatized water charges & they try to ignore them.

Try that and you’ll be attacked as an “*ist”, a “*got” and a “*ophobe” – freedom of speech is no longer PC!

Thanks Ann-Marie for speaking on all the irish public’s behalf! #not Maybe if we sorted or own housing and homeless, schooling, hospitals, elderly issues first, we could then look at the number of refugees/ecomnomic migrants coming? We are a small nation just emerging from a recession of 7+ years and a small number of clueless do gooders feel its ok to speak out on the nations behalf? Get a life Ann-Marie!

I don’t think it is as simple as pledging to give a bed to someone. What happens once the person is allocated a bed? How to they travel to and from where the bed is (assuming they are dispersed all over the country) to access all the support services they will need? Who will feed them? I agree that this country should help out but there needs to be thinking and planning.

defo… its ill thought out at the mo. it seems like the plan for now is just get them here. and i bet once theyre here, after a short while, ‘uplift’ will then be outraged at how bad the services for the ‘fugees are. why theyre comin all the way to ireland in the first place is beyond me. we’re so far away. if you’re comin that far, theres no goin back. here to stay. could be hard shakin em outta ur spare room after a while.

just remember Uplift are the geniuses who campaigned against the Central Bank’s mortgage proposals.

    Bunch of economically illiterate clowns

    1. Anne

The mortgage proposals that entailed having buyers come up with a 20% deposit, is it?
How would campaigning against that make them economically illiterate clowns?

  6. Christopher

Hmmm- I’m pretty sure Rwanda and many other conflicts/droughts in Africa were a lot worse but sure I’ll go along with crowd ignoring all that and agree that is the worst humanitarian disaster since the 2nd world war.

I’d love to know the critical differences between the Irish Refugee Council, the Migrants RIghts Center and Uplift Ireland. Anyone?

“The worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War is unfolding before our eyes” I guess they don’t think the 50 or so million who starved to death in China during the great leap forward count as humanity. TV makes a crisis.

  9. Paul Davis

These clowns have a mandate from 0.83% of the population.

99.17% either don’t care or do not want refugees here.

    99%. Their own numbers.

    Ha.

    Clowns.
