And despite the Birmingham Six being entirely innocent people, some will still present that as being pro IRA.

By 1990, the Birmingham 6 was quite a trendy cause.
1980 would have been a different matter. I doubt even Corbyn would have turned up at that stage

Might have been trendy in Ireland, but believe me it was very much a niche interest outside of Irish communities in Britain. English people I worked with insisted they were guilty even after their release.

Erm… having lived over yonder at the time of the Guilford four and the Brummie 6 re-trials, I can promise you very much they the trials were very much yesterday’s chips type news. The coverage of their innocence lasted one day. The preceding coverage of the trial was minimal apart from a few mentions at the top of the hour. The one big BBC investigative piece was weeks after the fact. Believe me, it was not devoted the acres of print and hours of TV it was in Ireland.
For any UK politician like Corbyn at that time to admit support for a re-trial…… it’s like saying you think ISIS might be a great bunch of lads now in terms of abhorrence your comments would be received with.
