This is just as much consumer-led as retail-led. Most supermarkets have xmas crap piled high from September 1st as the Xmas buying season starts much earlier than it used to. Consumers wanted to spend December at parties and nativity plays, not shopping – hence the switch a decade ago to autumnal gift-buying / larder-stocking. If you decide NOT to go for the massive consumerism of xmas you can navigate your way around this stuff and live your life quite happily.
