Return to a functioning market more like. Banks aren’t going to give people mortgages if there is no chance of getting the house back if they stop paying. If you want there to be housing available you need a working repossession system.

“Though the increase in bankruptcies is high, it does not match predictions at the time of the launch of the Insolvency Service of Ireland, in March 2013, which introduced new procedures for dealing with personal debt, including a reduction in the term of bankruptcy from 12 to three years. Expert predictions then ranged between 3,000 and 7,000 bankruptcies in the first year.”

Does anyone ever ask Mr. Hall how many actually repossessions take place vs what’s on “the list”? Looking at the dude on Twitter who gives the stats from Cork hearings, there’s never any actual repossessions granted from whatever number are listed on any particular day.

Bingo. Judge always tells them to go away and talk about it some more.
Any repossessions that are granted are usually to people who haven’t turned up in court.

Youre right, have someone else buy the house, and pay him to pay the mortgage and whatever he decides he wants to keep himself. DO that for life instead of 30 years

most folk wouldn’t mind a 30 year lease, in fairness. moving every couple of years is a pain in the face.

I get what you’re saying, but you can’t really blame people, the private rented sector is actually worse than homeownership in Ireland.

There’s no security of tenure or guarantee of a decent service from the landlord and you can be priced out of your home on the owners whim with like 30 days notice. It’s completely unsuitable to raising kids in.

In both scenarios the cards and odds are stacked against the mortgagee and the tenant. Our housing market is more cut-throat and deregulated than any other market we have, which is obscene since it’s *housing*, one of the most basic things in life.

Is that Fianna Fail and Fine Geel? They have always claim to be the true Republican heroes. I see them all as fascists to be honest.

….and yet we are European champions at not repaying our mortages…. an uncomfortable truth , neither popular with the government nor populist with the emotiCON movement and thus never addressed by the media. Schade. Enda may have to return our Stern for being the best boys and girls in Europe.

      It’s disgusting.

One side of the contract goes bankrupt, society steps in and impoverishes itself to keep them on life support.

The other side goes bankrupt they’re made debt-slaves for 3-8 years, lose the asset anyway, have to subsist on whatever the bank side thinks is the minimal price of survival.

Unless you’re wealthy, in which case you can go to England and have it over in a year and you get to keep your pension.

        ^_^ Frilly take note.

Any state that puts the interests of the corporations above the needs of its people is a fascist entity.

        1. scottser

in a totalitarian system the citizen’s rights are secondary to that of the state, not corporations. you’re thinking of a corporatocracy.

      1. Zuppy International

The Blueshirts have made fascism ubiquitous in the land by using public servants to enforce a corporate agenda: eg: the Gardaí and the courts inserted into an illegal and unlawful eviction process.

It was. The person sitting beside me on the Luas nudged me and asked “did you see they are putting the glass on the old Anglo building?”
I had not noticed it myself, to be honest, and I pass there daily. Too much browsing of BS on my smartphone :)

      1. Prop Joe

By the old ANglo building you mean the new Central Bank HQ?
        Oooh big news.
        Glad it’s being finished.

The whole site should be kept as it is, with an education centre built. Busloads of schoolkids should be brought there daily to be told of how political, financial and property developer scum destroyed the nation.

What is the point of the ‘Lets get ready to party’ bit in relation to the old Anglo building?

    1. dav

The Anglo building, owned by NAMA and then sold at top rate to the Central Bank and the golden circle of solicitors profited from that transaction.

David Hall. Ex Fianna Fail Casino Owner. Self appointed saviour of the Can’t pay/Won’t pay brigade. There are NO Repos in Ireland despite what the media tell you. The courts just kick the can down the road. Maybe if there were a few Repo’s then the poor people who were “forced” by the nasty banks to sleep out overnight to buy an overpriced gaf with borrowed money they could never pay back might have to move to somewhere they can afford to live. Meanwhile you & I will pay their mortgage for them. (Note: I am a wannabe First Time Buyer) And I would love a free gaf.

  5. Miss Carroll

Bit of a gap in logic David Hall. For a hearing to be listed now, the owners must have gone into arrears years ago. Before any “recovery”.

So just because some people are talking recovery doesn’t mean that all these cases would magically disappear and the owners suddenly get a wall of cash to clear their arrears. Nonsense.
