I am angered that we can’t treat this as a medical situation that should be discussed in the privacy of a doctors office.

But the more people who do come forward, the more the complexity of the situation is known. Hopefully it will break down the predictable black & white views out there.

I don’t believe we will see abortion in Ireland any time soon. Attitudes are slow to change but I hope that my daughter never has to make the choice I had to. I imagine that I’m not the only parent who would say that.

Well, I think you could have said that about gay marriage a few years ago.

The most recent electoral literature from my local FG politician supports repealing the 8th amendment.

The rest of the country will eventually be dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century by virtue of the youth of the country hopefully. Yes, progress happens too quickly for some and too slowly for others. It’ll happen, hopefully sooner rather than later, but within the next decade I reckon.

To be fair he asked slimy asked a question. What’s your own stance on that or is my own question too outrageous as well!

Neither of those conditions is a Fatal Foetal Abnormality. It’s the usual, nasty, snide aspersion being cast that women are lazy and vain and want abortions because pregnancy will clash with their holiday, or they don’t want to be stuck with a disabled child.

Bingo. Poor people don’t want to work, immigrants are terrorists or social welfare fraudsters, gays are either promiscuous or want children as a fashion accessory and women will have an abortion like they’ll have a solpadine for a hangover. There are lots and lots and lots of people who mistake their feelings for evidence and objective reality. Unfortunately, lots of these same people get to either make or influence law.

Ideally, the only person who’s opinion should matter as to whether a woman can get an abortion or not is the pregnant woman herself. The reason shouldn’t matter either. But Ireland being Ireland, the only way to fight the WE KNOW BETTER attitude is to point out the tragic stories of people who needed abortions for medical reasons, and couldn’t get them here. That more and more people are wiling to come forward and tell their stories is fantastic – but the fact that they have to in the first place is horrible,

Do you think so Lorcan? I’m not sure though I defer to your own experience. My opinion is that the right to choose an abortion is a rights issue. There should not be any situation where a woman’s right to choose is overruled by an abstract right to life of a barely evolved fetus

If you look at his twitter feed he’s just a troll who tries to start arguments with people (he doesn’t follow and who don’t follow him) who hold opposing views to his own. This broadsheet post will just boost his ego. Best ignored.

I wonder is Mark Daly as forthcoming with his views in real life as he is on twitter or is he just another anchor that hides behind a computer?

Regards the often mentioned 14-year jail term – has anyone been charged? Is anyone currently in prison for having an abortion? Has anyone ever been jailed? I presume it has (and never will) happen, but curious if someone has seen jail time.

    1. meadowlark

I’m curious too. Or will someone be dragged up before judge and jury to be made feel ashamed for a medical decision? Gail O’Rourke comes to mind. On trial for empathy.

    2. Lorcan Nagle

Nobody has been charged as best we can tell. It only covers abortions in Ireland, anyone who travels is safe. The main people who are in danger are those who take the abortion pill, but if taken properly, it’s practically impossible to tell the difference between an abortion by pill and a miscarriage. Nobody who has ordered the pills online and had them seized by customs has been charged.

Lots of whataboutery from the constantly-outraged “Glinner”.

He lives in England so they could avail of an abortion.

A baby has finger prints at 16weeks Its not Irish law that’s archaic. It’s abortion. Might have missed its cultural period but its scientifically outdated as solution to crises.

      1. meadowlark

But aistge do you have an alternative to offer in lieu of this ‘outdated solution’? Does anyone? One that will limit the pain and need for a woman to carry a child against her will? One that means those unborn children are protected? The world is just not good like that, really.
