This afternoon.

Merrion Hotel, Dublin

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin with Tanaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton at the launch of Labour’s new Budget 2016 online tax calculator.

Does it beat the simplicity and easy to use-ness of the acclaimed, already a week-old, Broadsheet calculator [link below]? Only you can decide.

If I made twice as much money as I do, I’d get 2.5x more extra money this year. What’s the word for something that’s opposite of progressive?

A bit late to the party there aren’t they? Sure I’ve already spent the extra couple of quid they gave us by splashing out, pardon the pun, on some fancy double ply toilet roll.
    We’re back baby!

I really don’t like any of the calculators.
You input the figures, not knowing the rates and you get your nett pay.
It’s kinda keeps people ignorant about working out their taxes themselves.

I’d prefer to just be given the new rates and work it out myself.

What’s the new rates for USC for instance, what are the tax bands and credits?
    The calculators are for dummies.

Even calculator Karl with the snug fitting suits was giving the wrong figure for the standard cut off amount there not too long ago. (saying it was 32k, when it was 33,800k).

Get the rates. Work it out yourself. Don’t rely on a calculator.
    Just my tuppence.

        It’s really not.

        You take your gross pay.
You work out your gross tax first. (up to a certain amount is the standard rate (20%), the balance is at the higher rate), then you take off your tax credits and you’re left with your net tax, which is taken off your gross pay.
Then you have USC, and PRSI on the gross too.
Minus them and your left with your nett.

Not taking into account pension contributions or anything like that.

It’s fairly straight forward. Karl and his calculator don’t help people understand it all much though.
Sorry Karl. Just messin’ about the suit. :)

ill have 42 lids extra a month .. 8 quid shy of a 50 bag. boost me up to being able to get a 100 bag a month and do away with water tax and theyll get my vote. ok no they wont at all, theyll never get my vote, but give me those things anyway.

My accountant just told me I owe four grand and I have to pay it now. And that’s because my last accountant was rubbish.

You were paying your previous accountant for his professional advice. If you were badly advised, you’re free to pursue him for the four grand – if you can be bothered.

To understand Labour’s performance in Government, just use any calculator.

    Type in the number 5317.

    Turn the calculator upside-down.

Jesus Howlin what sort of sticky paws do you have to get your Government sponsored iPad screen in that state. Use a wipe man.
