Plus they are absolutely cack compared to coal
Surely you can’t compare them, they’re both part of an ignition chain at the top of which sits polish coal. You use a match to light the bit of news paper, the bit of news paper to light the firelighters, the firelighters to light the briquettes (which have been belted off any hard pointy surface to break them into thin slices of briquettes) and the briquettes to light the coal. Then you sit in silence apart from the ‘jaysus that’s great coal’ comment every 45 mins or so.
My trick is to get the firelighter, kindling and briquettes going first then hump an unopened 10kg bag of nuggets in on top – I run a large stove – so I don’t ruin my mani with coal dust. I editorialise on the coal quality in a similar timeframe.
i prefer turf and polish coal… briquettes are too darn dense.
I just use some wood and some firelighters, coal on top. No need for the briquettes.
Like your style, this sounds like an evening well spent.
If you’re an emigrant/émigré, you light them, wait till the smoke rises, inhale and weep for the Wild Geese on this day.
(To be read in the voice of the late Seamus Heaney)
Turf.
Damn it but I miss a real fire!
..anybody have any suggestions for “real fire” pubs with decent vibe in Dublin?
Thought I’d pay a few a visit for a few quiet ones in new year.
Apologies if this was mentioned last year, I’m a lazy sod (geddit?) and can’t be bothered looking it up
Goosey, we put out a request to publin.ie for some suggestions: https://twitter.com/publinie
Publin’s website has a list of them, I believe.
At €18, have we reached peak briquette?
Well someone has
But then there’s the hopper market
And lads still siding their own
So
Its hard to tell
Open fires, bah, then also enjoy the hacking cough and lingering chest cold you can’t seem to shake.
Ah but Shur ya can’t bate sitting in a small pub near an open fire holding a hot powers after carrying your great uncles coffin up a long steep path in a graveyard
