My bike was stolen yesterday from outside my house in Glasnevin, Dublin. I had left it for about 20 seconds while I opened the garage and it was gone, I ran after the guy but he was on a bike, and I was not.

It was a Dawes Discovery 101 Men’s Hyrbid which was white when I bought it (2 1/2 years ago) but I had covered it in silver duct tape, green spray paint, black and white checkered tape and green, black, red and yellow electrical tape – to try and deter thieves. It also had an Abus U lock attached to it, a black rack, one mudguard (spray painted teal) on the back wheel, and some purple duct tape covering a tear on the seat. It wasn’t the most inconspicuous bike to steal by any means.

I’ve attached a photo of what it looked like when it was stolen (top) and when I bought it (above), it could be somewhere between the two now. I mostly want to get it back so that the bike thieves don’t win. Any help you could give me would be fantastic.

Anyone?

And they fall off and sue you. You know that’d be the case, though I’d buy one anyway. Go invent clever person!!

Oh and the bass player in my band has his bike stolen yesterday. He’s from Burgos. I told him he’s really experiencing Dublin properly now. It wasn’t of any comfort to him.

exploding front wheel nuts with remote controlled detonation within a 5 mile radius. keep an eye out for blokes with extensive facial abrasions and missing teeth. punch first, ask questions later.

There’s a good chance that locking the front wheel will send them over the handle bars.. so you want it to lock only when they are cycling in front of traffic, breaking red lights etc..

I like the artist’s representation, adds a new twist to the stolen bike posts…

what a scumbag though, hope you get it back.

Did the thief head north or south from Glasnevin? Academic really but I’m just wondering if bike theft is moving out to the burbs

I’ve been around this site now for a few years – enough time to realize there’s a ‘thing’ about bikes being stolen in Dublin. Who can recall Dan, @ 2 years ago who chased a bicycle thief (filmed via iphone) – and ultimately Broadsheet celebrated Dan as a hero by showing the video. The double-locking doesn’t work as a non-incentive for potential thieves. I don’t get it. I cycled lots of times to my office in Wardour Street, , left the bicycle chained to something, or other and it was invariably there, when I went to fetch it? When I say, “Invariably” – I mean’t ALWAYS!
