Maybe that’s the point he’s making. It should be universal suffrage, not just the graduates of some Universities.

When you consider that the Seanad can send legislation back to the Dail, it’s entirely undemocratic.

Craughell isn’t a university Senator, he’s on a panel elected by Councillors and members of the Oireachtas. The university seats are the most democratic part of the Seanad.

        “Most democratic!”
Love it. Pity you have it arseways. The Senate elections are exactly as democratic as the government, apart from the University seats.

We elect people. They elect other people. Don’t like the people they elect? Simple. Vote for different councillors.

I’m convinced 99% of people whining about the Seanad have no notion how it’s put together. If it was elected the same as Dail Eireann then it would be the same as Dail Eireann.

Even though I hate posters I think that we should be able to vote who goes into the Seanad. At present its just a convalescent home for would be or retired politicians. Having said that I like Mr Craughwell!

I have seen many, but I live near a university and they’ve always been for the university panel. Posters for the vocational panels seem like an utter waste.

This poster was seen in Sligo, where a national meeting of County Councillors was taking place, hence the poster I presume. There were also posters for Tom MacSharry (cousin of newly elected Marc, nephew of Ray) among others.
