In the month of May 2016, 1,294 residences were completed nationwide, of which 431 were in Dublin…Official estimates are, we need 25,000 residences nationally/yr of which 10,000 are in Dublin. That’s 2,083/mth nationally & 833 in Dublin….The housing crisis became crisisier in May 2016 to tune of 789 units nationally and 402 in Dublin.

The ghost estates tend to be places where people no longer want to live (Longford et. al); few if any ghost estates in Dublin.

I suspect you are being sarcastic, but in fact you are right – this couple, when faced with eviction, was offered a free house in Co. Meath, but turned it down.

There are hundreds of houses within the rent allowance threshold outside of Dublin, but people refuse to take them.

You could purchase hundreds of dwellings west of the Shannon for the annual cost of the emergency homeless spend by the four Dublin local authorities.
Obviously there are benefits in keeping people close to friends and family, but at the same time there are huge numbers not eligible for social housing who find Dublin very expensive to live in as it stands.
Ok. So bevause some people find Dublin very expensive to live in, we should move people who need help meeting that expense out of Dublin entirely. A 4 hour drive away from their friends and fsmily and where most of the jobs are. Ok

what do you propose moose – that the public should perpetually underwrite people’s poor lifestyle choices and ignorance of contraception? I suppose you are an unfortunate beneficiary of the no johnnies rule yourself in fairness.
It’s not uncommon for people who are buying a house to compromise on their choice of location; people should cut their cloth according to their measure – that goes for people purchasing property, renting privately, or renting through rent allowance.

Does that make it right? Regardless, having to choose between Ballsbridge and Lucan is not the same as choosing between Dublin and a Limerick suburb.
I’m not suggesting people should have to move to Limerick; plenty of places available in Westmeath, Kildare, etc. well within the RA limits.
Lots of people are obliged to move by circumstances, some a lot further afield than Limerick; I don’t necessarily think that certain sectors of society should be immune to this by virtue of the fact that they are in receipt of an income from the State.

We live in a time of ever increasing profits and ever decreasing wages. You can theoretically extrapolate to a situation where only the absolute wealthiest can afford to live in our capital city. Is that a healthy scenario in your mind?

It is in fact almost universal.
I fully support my taxes being used to provide accomodation for those unable to provide for it themselves.
However it should be spent wisely. You can house far more people for the same price in different locations throughout the country.
So people who’ve lost their jobs thanks to supply side/neo liberal economic policies should be forced out of our capital city because that makes the most sense in supply side economic/neo liberal theory? Well. At least that’s consistent. Not very smart but consistent.

Completions are running at highest since 2010 and continuing to accelerate, whilst all would like this to be faster, none want the economic correction that sees lower demand from buyers and tenants.
Time to stop diagnosing the problem and start bringing forward practical solutions, otherwise what value does spinning a slight improvement into a disaster have?

Bring in German and Scandinavian builders. Not only will they build proper homes, but they don’t skimp on materials and use inferior cheap substitutes. You can’t trust Irish built homes, the quality is appalling
well you can trust that they were just thrown together towards the final years of the boom e.g only 2-3 screws per door hinge in every house on a new estate

Do these figures include uninhabited houses being returned to use? In my area (not Dublin), three uninhabited houses have been renovated and families have moved in in the last few months: another house is being turned into two units for original occupier (in a Granny flat) and her son and his family. That’s four essentially new units being provided, and three families will vacate other properties that will then be sold/rented. Less crisisier by the minute in my view. This does not include several new builds in the area as well.
