I listened to Theresa May’s speech, about how she would think about “you”, in all those various situations.

The new prime minister said: “The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few but by yours. We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives.

“When we take the big calls, we’ll think not of the powerful, but you. When we pass new laws we’ll listen not to the mighty, but to you. When it comes to taxes we’ll prioritise not the wealthy but you.”

Does anyone believe this? Is she appointing Jeremy Corbyn to her cabinet? It reminds me a lot of the trick used by Aussie Tory politicians – tell big lies and you will fool enough people:

Why the hell would she appoint the leader of the shadow cabinet as in her cabinet? Are you mental?

I was being sarcastic, highlighting the speech is what one might expect from the Labour Party.

Takes any political space away from Labour too. It’s clever politicking.

      “Does anyone believe this?”

She made Liam Fox the trade minister. No. Also, Boris Johnson as foreign sec is so ridiculous, it’s like she’s mocking everyone.

An interesting move by May, especially considering she’s keeping BoJo around, I’m assuming on a very tight leash considering his monumental fall from grace and treachery. Bojo however is the more mainstream face of Brexit, everyone knows that he didn’t really want it to happen and it was a screw up when it did. Gove on the other hand is a zealot more keen to close the UK’s borders than negotiate a reasonable trade deal with Europe. All sign are pointing to Brex-lite, which will probably mean a deal struck where immigration remains essentially unchanged, the UK instituting what the EU what DC talked about pre referendum, freedom to work, not freedom of movement. The immigration issue will be pushed to the side and the spin will be likely more on reclaiming sovereignty and working with Europe. Good news for Ireland all round one would feel, but the phukwits in the UK will be up in arms over filthy johnny foreigner destroying their NHS and taking all the jobs and benefits, when really the blame should be laid at the feet of the Tories. So a win win win for May and a very handy scapegoat still in the paddock as she gives free reign to GCHQ to get up everyones bumhole with a torch looking for terrorists.

I think you are pretty much on the mark here.

A free movement of labour which won’t be able to claim benefits if unemployed after the six months National Insurance runs out, so they will have to leave. Britain is the second largest economy in the EU so they can afford to play hardball with the Germans but this sort of scenario is the exact opposite of UKIP’s ‘they’re taking our jobs’ pitch into the Labour heartlands.

From a working man or woman’s perspective, it is a complete con.

Sure but they’re mistaken in thinking immigrants are the cause of their low wages and/or stretched services.

Wages in low or unskilled jobs are forced down by immigrants as it is basic supply and demand. Not that I am blaming them as we Irish have the t shirt but a fact none the less. Services are stretched because no one really knows how people are in the country at any one time therefore proper planning is near impossible. Fire fighting becomes the norm, especially in the NHS.

But, my point is that Merkel is an advocate of the free movement of people. It is somewhat humanistic in that they hopefully will be welcomed and can make a better life for themselves because they will have the same rights as everyone else. What May will be arguing is that people are merely disposable work units to be kicked out when suits. They have no chance of integration. They will not have the same rights.

“Wages in low or unskilled jobs are forced down by immigrants as it is basic supply and demand.”

They’re not. A business owner will pay as little as he can get away with. I guarantee you every immigrant could leave tomorrow and nobody’s wage will increase. Do you not think that if govt dropped the min wage, employers would pay less?

            “Services are stretched”

As has been shown in study after study, immigrants pay in more tax than they take out. They help pay for services. Services are stetched because neoliberal governments prefer privatisation and tend to neglect services.

I guarantee you every immigrant could leave tomorrow and nobody’s wage will increase.

You can guarantee nothing. Free labour movement across EU only means a bigger black market. I have four eastern Europeans living next door. All of them working, all of them paid cash in hand and all below the minimum wage. Two have third level ed.

Don’t forget this is the Theresa May who sent vans around certain parts of Britain with ‘Go Home’ messages to illegal migrants plastered on the side. She is considered a moderate by modern Tory standards…..she also isn’t a fan of the Good Friday Agreement either…..the next 5 to 10 years will be interesting….

Gove could return to journalism and take over the Boris column in the Telegraph, 260k according to yesterdays reports.

Big bloodbath. Cameron’s posh boys out and Brexiteers being given “You broke it, you own it” jobs. Leadsom gets Agriculture after saying farming subsidies would be fine. Davis gets Brexit Ministry and Fox has to make international trade work.

Boris gets a stripped down Foreign Office that’s been stripped of international trade. Brexit will be negotiated by someone else. Crises will get handled by No10 anyway. He’s not in control of foreign aid. He’s basically shoved on a plane, been sent far away from London and will be constantly knackered. Screw ups will reflect on him and won’t do any serious damage to party and/or country. Set up to fail.

Could be very smart moves on May’s part.

    1. The Old Boy

It’s either the most Machiavellian cabinet selection in a generation, or May accidentally published the joke cabinet that she drew up when she got pissed after Leadsom dropped out.
