well done Irish Times! doing their bit to stoke up fear of Islam with the top headline “FBI warns of increased Islamic violence in Europe”

    (a) there was clearly space for the word “Islamist” – although even that term is dodgey in itself and has been twisted to now imply Islamic fundamental extremist or violent Jihadst
    (a) the FBI has no jurisdiction outside the boundaries of US soil (that’s the remit of other US agencies) so why is this news item being given top billing on the front page of the Irish Times?
Also, in the article they don’t even preface “Islamic State” with “so called” as I notice the BBC are now always careful to do so.
    Anyway, rant over and out!

      1. f_lawless

you don’t see a problem with framing the actions of a small misguided minority who claim to be acting in the name of Islam as representitive of Islam in general? You do know in Muslim countries they don’t make reference to the so called Islamic State as they find it offensive but rather call it ‘Daesh’ which means ‘a group of bigots who impose their will on others’ in Arabic?
The Pope got it right yesterday when he said “The world is at war….but to clarify..not a war of religion. There is a war of interests. There is a war for money. There is a war for natural resources. There is a war for domination of peoples. This is the war,”
Why didn’t the Irish Times lead with that story/headline? But no, they prefer to go with the words of an FBI director – who only recently has had his integrity called into question over his handling of the Clinton email security breach scandal – over possibly the most well known man on the planet, holding sway over a billion or so

haha, a broadsheet commenter calling for the popes speeches to be getting page news

          is this real life?

    1. Disasta

I see a bunch of people agree now the media is a major problem with spreading this terror.
Stick that up your hoop Spaghetti.

Trump encourages Russia to hack Clinton emails.

Crazy stuff. If he is prepared to put party politics over national security then god knows what he will do if he gets into office.

        1. Deluded

          Thank you!

From the New York Times article on the hack:
“It may take months, or years, to figure out the motives of those who stole the emails, and more important, whether they were being commanded by Russian authorities, and specifically by Putin.”
I’d say myself it was a Bernie Bro…

An invitation to Russia to hack the next Potus?!?!?!

    Ah here

‘Walking Dead isn’t the mad stuff anymore

The Daily Mail’s headline is endemic of housing lists around the country. Some people whinging and moaning about living conditions then when offered perfectly fine alternative accommodation, turn it down. This is why people are on lists for years because of these self-entitled muppets. 1 offer only and if refused you can jog on and fend for yourself. No regards for her kids here.

    1. The Real Jane

So even if you rack your brain, you cannot think of a single reasonable reason why a woman with two young children might need to live near her mother as a priority?

      1. Harry Molloy

my missus is from a lovely spot in Dun Laoighre. we’d love to live beside her mother as a priority. it’s not feasible right now so we’ll make do until our situation improves.

        1. The Real Jane

That’s great for you both, you are truly examples of the best humanity has to offer and I think we’d all be honoured and privileged to be as capable and responsible as you. Both. If you were single parents though, it might become more necessary for you to have family support. Just as an example of how other people’s situations may differ from yours off the top of my head.

          1. Harry Molloy

oh I know, ideally we would house everyone where is most suitable, especially single mothers close to families. and every effort should be made.
but sometimes not everything is possible so you make do and work towards your ideal situation. it’s called living.

          2. The Real Jane

So basically your opinion is if she’s working and relies on her mother for childcare because she can’t afford to pay for it, she should…? What? Give the children to an orphanage? Quit work? What if she’s her mother’s carer? She should let her mother suffer? If one of her children has special needs and she needs assistance to cope, she should just be much better? If she’s depressed and needs someone on hand to help her cope she should just get better? If she’s partially disabled etc…

I can think of many scenarios where suck it up is not a helpful, imaginative and practical solution to the problems that a stranger whose circumstances are unknown to me may have.

          3. Harry Molloy

the state is there to protect us all but not to solve all of lifes complexities and difficulties.

you’re right, there’s a million scenarios she’s better off close to her mother. but if there’s no place there then there’s no place there.

is no one responsible for anything anymore?

anyway, not worth arguing over, reality will take over

          4. The Real Jane

Well listen, I don’t know, she might be just making a big deal about nothing and the house in Cabra could be just perfect for her if she was more flexible. I don’t know. But that’s my whole point – I don’t know anything about this woman or her life, however, I strenuously object to the idea that I should judge her negatively on the basis of what the Daily Mail chooses to tell me about her.

I really despise this attempt to make people turn on each other in a battle for scarce resources where anyone who isn’t cravenly grateful for any tidbit is vilified. We – many of us – would like to live in a compassionate country. The essence of compassion is not providing the least possible to keep people from dying on the streets (although in fairness, we don’t even manage to achieve that exceedingly unambitious goal) but to allow people to live in dignity and with some enjoyment and prospect of a good future. To my mind, suitable accommodation close to family who can assist with children is not some excessively entitled requirement – I think it’s pretty practical and has a view to the long term stability and success of the family involved. Why shouldn’t they want that or try to get it? Because the Daily Mail don’t like it? To hell with that.

“I really despise this attempt to make people turn on each other in a battle for scarce resources where anyone who isn’t cravenly grateful for any tidbit is vilified. ”

            Agreed.

Nor should we assume to think the worst like your list of histrionics on a situation you (nor I) know nothing about… “if she’s working and relies on her mother for childcare because she can’t afford to pay for it, she should…? What? Give the children to an orphanage? Quit work? What if she’s her mother’s carer? She should let her mother suffer? If one of her children has special needs and she needs assistance to cope, she should just be much better? If she’s depressed and needs someone on hand to help her cope she should just get better? If she’s partially disabled etc…”

One extreme list of assumptions does not correct the other.

          6. MoyestWithExcitement

            “Agreed.

Nor should we assume to think the worst like your list of histrionics on a situation you (nor I) know nothing about…”

And yet you wrote; “This is nothing but entitlement bullpoo! And what makes it worse is there is a housing crisis, and this one is getting picky….”

          7. some old queen

The one thing none of you mention is where they wanted to house her. Cabra ffs.

Even the pit bulls pair up for protection when out for a walk there.

          8. Clampers Outside!

            “And yet you wrote…….”
            I sure did Moyest.

I called her demands “entitled”. It’s based on her quote “they just won’t give me what I want”.
Makes more sense doesn’t it, to put hold on something rather than scream foul first, and then list off a bunch of maybe this or that situation. I commented on the little info available.

And i’d say the same thing again, if another person came out with the line “they just won’t give me what I want”.

            Damn right I would.

          9. MoyestWithExcitement

You can do what you like. I’m just noting how you agreed with Jane that nobody should judge her. You told Jane she shouldn’t even speculate that this woman might have a good reason to want to be near her ma. You then said you know nothing about the case either. You said all that, all about how she shouldn’t be judged, minutes after judging her.

          10. MoyestWithExcitement

And “*damn* right”? You sound like you’re proud of your anonymous Internet post judging the homeless single mother.

          11. Clampers Outside!

Yes Moyest… yes, I know nothing of the case accept the quote from the person in question…. which has a bang of entitlement to it. So there is indication of leaning one way, that of a sponger.

There are no indications of leaning the other way, a genuine requirement.

            Simples :)

          12. MoyestWithExcitement

“yes, I know nothing of the case accept the quote from the person in question”

The quote where she mentions she’s not being given what she wants? You agreed with Jane that she might have good reason for wanting that. You agreed that you do not know her reasons. But you judged her minutes beforehand anyway. Simples.

          13. Clampers Outside!

Yes, being moved to a home within Dublin and getting pissy about it for the fact, by her own admission, she’s just simply not getting what she wants…..

Yes, I called that ‘entitlement’ and I’d do it again.

          14. Clampers Outside!

“You agreed with Jane that she might have good reason for wanting that.”

Believing someone is acting out of some sort of entitlement on the basis of the info known, the quote, is not the same as vilification.
I agreed she should not be vilified, that’s all. And to assume some entitlement on the basis of the quote…. why not? To call that vilification is stupid in the extreme. It means everyone and anyone should be believed straight away and that approach gets no one anywhere. And the opposite of believing all, is not vilification, thanks, it’s common sense.

          15. MoyestWithExcitement

“Yes, being moved to a home within Dublin and getting pissy about it for the fact, by her own admission, she’s just simply not getting what she wants…..”

‘Pissy about it’ ‘Fact, by her own admission’

You *read* one sentence from her, in the Daily Heil, and have no idea why she said it or even what she said next but you’re ok judging her as entitled despite earlier agreeing with Jane that she shouldn’t be judged and telling Jane she shouldn’t speculate that this woman might have good reason to hold out for what sge wants. You then admitted you know nothing either.

So you admit you both know nothing about this woman and you insist that Jane shouldn’t say that she might have good reasons for this but it’s ok for *you* to say her reasons are bad. Despite the fact you already admitted you don’t know what they are. Ok then.

“Yes, I called that ‘entitlement’ and I’d do it again.”

            Ya big brave rebel. :D

      2. Clampers Outside!

…..so much that you refuse a home, seriously Jane? It’s not like they’re moving her to Cork from Dublin, she’ll still be in the same county.

This is nothing but entitlement bullpoo! And what makes it worse is there is a housing crisis, and this one is getting picky…. wtf?

    2. MoyestWithExcitement

“1 offer only and if refused you can jog on and fend for yourself. No regards for her kids here.”

And what regard are you showing those kids when yiu kick them and their mother to the streets to ‘fend for herself?’

    3. forfeckssake

She has two kids. Could be one boy and one girl. Are they supposed to share a room when they are teenagers?
Maybe she’s thinking about what’s best for her kids over the longer term?

I think you just want to sneer at those who who see as beneath you.

      1. ReproBertie

A teenage brother and sister sharing a room? Society would surely collapse if we allowed this to happen.

I see conflicting views on the state of the UK economy. So, the right wing rags reckon there is a Brexit boom, because the economy grew in the June quarter.
WTF – Only 1 week of that quarter was after the Brexit vote. Let’s see how the next quarter goes, will we?
