A sample of the many references to films of the 70s and 80s in Stranger Things (including The Goonies, Alien, E.T The Extra-Terrestrial, Firestarter, Poltergeist, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Explorers, The Shining, Stand by me, Carrie and Commando), dutifully compiled by Ulysse Thevenon.

Fantastic programme, always feels like I’m sitting down as a kid to watch a video on a saturday night.

they only included films that had similar scenes but there are other films/tv that it is also similar to such as Super 8, Species, Akira, Under the Skin and Minirity Report

Surely Super 8 falls into the same category as a tribute to the older films rather than actually being an inspiration for Stranger Things?
Not saying it’s not good, it is great and it has the same feel. I just think it should fall on the same side as Stranger Things in being a tribute to 80’s classics, i don’t think Super 8 was in thei minds during the making of this.

I really enjoyed it. It struck a great atmosphere from start to finish. And the girl who plays Eleven is a smashing actor.

Yeah it is, even the opening credits set an atmosphere and make you feel 8 years old again.
I’ve only two episodes left and I’ll be savoring those this weekend

It is the best thing in ages. Highly highly recommended. I just finished it and might watch it again this weekend.

I’m worried about what to watch next, I’m thinking of introducing the other half to Twin Peaks

          1. Waddy Dilson

I agree but it’s really hard for someone unfamiliar with it to get into it, and it has dated noticeably in some parts. Screw it I’m doing it.

          2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

No its fine, they’ll either get it or they won’t I think

You are right to be worried, I’m hiding under my desk crying thinking about what’s tonight’s TV is.

Twin Peaks – defo. I only watched that about 4 years ago, tiptop. Until the last season when it goes full on nuts. We were basically mainlining it, that really messes with your head so beware.

          1. Waddy Dilson

            Oh I did season 1 & 2 in a few days hungover when I was about 19.
And the film too. And then I started watching all of Lynch’s other stuff.
Then i checked into a mental home.

            Have you seen The Jinx?
If not that’s a good two nights of absolutely gripping television. Truly the best documentary I’ve seen in a long long time, far far superior to Making a Murderer

          3. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Yes! That made me feel very odd. He is a bad man. Couldn’t finish making a murderer though, I got too angry

The husband stuck on Making a Murderer the other night. I saw one episode and thought that was it, and I was horrified to discover that there were a load more episodes to go. We couldn’t finish the series. It’s unbelievably depressing.

          5. Waddy Dilson

@ Mildred – To be honest, it is pretty depressing at the start, but watch the rest. He’s no angel.

(Am I the only person in the world who thinks that, while it’s lovely to look at, and impressive in its number of pop references, it is on a whole rather superficial?)
