Contemporary folk/trad outfit Lynched have today announced that they will no longer be going under the name, for reasons stated above.
Having used it for over a decade, in fairness, they have far outgrown its original use, when the brothers Lynch were a punk performance-art duo.
Lankum, as they will henceforth be known, is a name that draws from Irish Traveller culture, and rather suits their socially-conscious attitudes and output.
Fight!

They are culturally appropriating traveller culture with this new name. This is problematic and deeply offensive.
They are stealing from a culture to which they don’t belong.
blah blah blah yackety smackity.
Why does yackety end in ‘ety’ and smackity in ‘ity’?
typo. Was channelling the Tazmanian Devil’s father at the time.
Gah! Whenever you notice spellings like that, a wizard done it.
Bet you love traveller culture. Bet you’re all for its protection.
Deeply offensive? to who? you? Would ya fupp off petal
sarcasm, i’m sure
Still great music.
Good band.
Old name was ok; new name is gash.
From Februaury right through until Smarch….
I believe The Sex Pistols considered changing their name to Plerughciq due to sensitivity to the needs of oppressed genitalia, but decided against it.
Wankum.
Oops, sorry!
#care
Jesus, what were they thinking in the first place? They picked it after considering “Gassed”.
Solidarity with the oppressed!? Yikes, could they please just be honest and say “we’re changing our name because it started as a funny pun but now that we’re more famous and its a bit embarrassing”
+1
Oh!…..
*quickly disbands fan club called ‘The Lynch Mob’
They should keep the name and highlight it’s meaning, lest we forget the sins of yesterday. Educate as well as entertain. The Dead Kennedys were not called the Dead Kennedys because they supported political assassination.
You can lynch any race to be fair, otherwise the term ‘lynching blacks’ would be redundant
It’s origin is from mid 19th century Virginia, a Capt Lynch. I doubt if it was white people he was hanging. It’s a very racially charged word.
“Charles Lynch (1736-1796) was a Virginia planter, politician, and American revolutionary who headed an irregular court in Virginia to punish Loyalist supporters of the British during the American Revolutionary War. The terms “lynching” and “lynch law” are believed to be derived from his name.”
Sound pretty white to me.
You should go on a tour of Black America telling them they have it wrong all these years.
Well you can establish a system of apartheid to organise anything, like say… a bowl of skittles.
Hehe!
Seems like a reasonable move.
What I would like to see would be a cessation of Irish politicians traipsing over to the U.S. every St Patrick’s Day to march in parades with such killers of black people as the NYPD etc.
Where is the Irish BLM? Or are we still at the BLT (Black Lives Talk) level?
What do you mean where is it?
I think you just became it!
Thanks for showing some initiative. All too rare these days.
Unlike the neighbouring island, we have insufficient white trustafarians here to ride such tokenistic hobby horses.
Check out the comments on their Facebook. It’s like a Who’s Who of the Irish left all falling over themselves in sycophantic syrup.
I always assumed it was because there was a Lynch in their band. Ah well, hop on board the bandwagon, lads!
Are you reading this Ham Sandwich?
Yeah…. there’s Mama Cass fans find that name terribly offensive.
Urban myth no?
it is.
But sure that doesn’t mean they’re not offended…
