Shots of the old medieval quarter of Cork City.

Taken by Broadsheet contributor Mike McGrath-Bryan over the weekend.

Sez Mike:

An area laid waste by recent business closures but ignored by gentrification, the Old Town area of the city has long possessed its own character. Though urgent economic assistance is needed for the area, she continues to show a resilience – typical of Corkonians in general.

A real character shines through, while the intervention of community group Reimagine Cork has given the place a touch of colour, with a DIY feel.

Oh Christ, do we have to read about ‘The Skiddies’

Skiddy n.1 – Derogatory expression for someone from Cork with a chip on their shoulder. Popularly used by native Dubliners as an expression of contempt for newly arrived people from Ireland’s third largest city.

Derived from the words skid mark n. the mark made on the underpants by an unwashed arse.

Also derived from Ringaskiddy, a village in County Cork located on the western side of Cork Harbour, south of 15 kilometres from Cork city where the majority of Skiddies come from…and should stay!

    Lol!

Tell me something, I don’t know. Belfast is Ireland’s 2nd city.

But just in the interest of equality of insult, let’s just call people from Belfast….Bel-Enders!

          Lolz

        Never heard of it either.

Cork/Corkonians aren’t really enough on Dublin’s radar for us to come up with a nickname for them, derogatory or otherwise.

    Corks a tip.
In fact there’s very few places as well maintained as Dublin.
    Especially South Dublin.
