as someone that does buy art can i say that that list is a mix of sensible advice and utter nonsense. the main rule should be not just that you love it but that you can’t live without it. Of course you should buy at auction (assuming you love the piece so much you can’t live without it). However you should make sure that you are getting the piece cheaper than it would cost from a dealer or the artist’s gallery (this is frequently true of living artists that are early or mid-career, you will pay significantly more if you buy from their gallery).

“can’t live without” – that’s a very large exaggeration.

Buy art from the artist, on the drip, so the artist gets small regular payments till it’s paid off and the middleman gets nowt.

Only buy art that compliments the colour scheme you’ve developed in the living room.
