‘The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was Aidan Walsh in Blackrock Park around 87 I think.

I’d never heard of him before it and according to the lads I was with I was absolutely dumbstruck throughout.

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was My Bloody Valentine at Electric Picnic because 1) I never thought i’d get a chance to see them live 2) they were stunning and as loud as war (or what I would imagine war would sound like) and 3) the version of You Made Me Realise, caused some people with sensitive ears to leave. Any band that deliberately thins out its crowd are worth seeing.

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was thin lizzy at the sfx because i was 14 and the first time i got to snog a rocker chick. oh yeah, lizzy were great too – it was the thunder and lightning tour. i mostly remember going round with a hardon for 3 hours though.

I saw some band in SFX once. I can’t remember who they were. Anyone got a clue? Probably around, erm, 1997. Or before that. Or after.

  4. Micl

‘The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was We Cut Corners at The Academy because they were a supporting act but went out into the crowd after to watch the headliner, gas’

  5. Tarfton Clax

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was the idiots upstairs in some Yoga Hall in Temple Bar in the early 1990’s because they were brilliant, and all members of the band were tripping balls, hence 20 minute long Jazz styled tracks rather than the hardcore noise we (and they) had expected. Awesome

  6. Lorcan Nagle

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was Therapy? at Sunstroke ’94 because they didn’t let up from the moment they hit the stage, and blew every bad there out of the water – including the Chilli Peppers at their height. I saw some guy wander out of the moshpit holding one of his shoes with a big cut on his head, telling everyone who asked if he was allright that it was all just good fun.

  7. Happy Molloy

‘The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was Electric Eddie at the 2fm Beat on the Street in Castlebar 1996 because Bolgers car park was changed utterly and completely on that beautiful night and Castlebar was finally included on that list of “Places I’d love to play before I die”

  8. Leopold Gloom

‘The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was JJ72 at Smithfield/Witness/Slane because although their music was a bit rubbish, impressive falsetto and a few good choons aside, young Leopold Gloom fancied the pants off Hilary Woods at the time and was very much enamoured at the site of her in person. She’s doing decent music these days too.

No doubt I’ve seen better Irish live acts, but fond young memories and all that.

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was Jape supporting David Kitt at Whelans in about 2003/2004 because it was one of the first times I had seen Richie Egan in his Jape mantle. But not only that, to be playing as part of the opening act Redneck Manifesto, and playing bass for David Kitt I was amazed at the amount of energy he displayed the whole night.

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was James Vincent McMorrow upstairs in Whelan’s before he was signed circa 2008/09. His songs weren’t as ‘produced’ as they are now, it was just him, his guitar, and a ridiculous voice that kept the small crowd captivated.

Picked up an EP on the night which is excellent, unfortunately lost the physical copy of it, but thankfully still have the digital.

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was Rusangano Family at Dolans, Limerick because they are an unbelievable live performance of Irish hip-hop. They do loads for promoting multiculturalism and always support young and upcoming acts. Their energy is top class and frankly they are one of the best live acts I have ever seen.

  12. ivan

the best live performance from an Irish act that I’ve ever witnessed was Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy at the Gaeity Theatre, some time in 1981/2.

I was but a nipper, but it was great fun. And THAT was good parenting.

  13. Rugbyfan

Aslan at the Michelstown Deer festival in summer 1994. Back of a trailer in the town square, small crowd but they played like they were entertaining 80,000. It has since mushroomed to become Indiependance.

    1. bertie blenkinsop

They’re much maligned but around the time of their first album they were absolutely brilliant live.

  14. Mike

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was DELORENTOS at INEC KILLARNEY because IT WAS ME AND MY GIRLFRIEND SPENDING OUR FIRST CHRISTMAS TOGETHER AND MID WAY DURING THE SET THE SOUND SYSTEM CRASHED IN THE VENUE SO RATHER THAN JUST WAIT FOR IT TO START UP AGAIN, ONE OF THE BAND TOOK OUT AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR AND THEY PLAYED A FEW SONGS ACOUSTICALLY WHILE THE SYSTEM WAS GETTING FIXED. MET THE BAND AFTERWARDS AND THEY WERE SO LOVELY, THEY REMAIN TO THIS DAY MY FAVOURITE BAND.

    1. bertie blenkinsop

      Delorentos are your favourite band?
Of ALL the brilliant bands in the world?
      Wow.
I wouldn’t even say they’re their mammies favourite band but to each their own.

      1. Serval

Well, Pavement aren’t even their own mammies’ favourite band but whatever you’re having yourself.

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was Elevens at The Stables in Mullingar because it was beautiful.

  16. Joe Cool

The best irish live performance I’ve witnessed was a slane when they did the midnight at the olympia gigs. Always great gigs

  17. dylad

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was The Undertones at the Galway Arts Festival 2016 on the night we won city of culture because (a) they played 30 brilliant songs in 30 minutes, (b) Paul McCloone makes you forget all about Fergal Sharkey, (c) it was my son’s first gig and we got right up the front row and he loved every minute (d) everyone was in fantastic form, Galway at its best (e) the Undertones were a surprise support act for me (f) the main even was another lad of Irish extraction Elvis Costello who was superb (f) I lost even more of my hearing but it was worth it.

  18. mildred st. meadowlark

Best performance of an Irish act if ye ask me was RSAG, just about any time, because by god that lad can play.

  19. Wait For It

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was My Bloody Valentine at the SFX in May, 1992 because to this day, I have never had a more visceral experience of live music. Including seeing the band themselves again twice, indoors, since they came back in 2008, I have never heard anything so loud. Ticketholders left the venue to listen from the footpath outside. Even wearing earplugs, people still had to cover their ears, especially during ‘You Made Me Realise’. Added to this was a light show that seemed specifically designed to disorient and confuse (such as the blindingly bright lights turned on the audience during YMMR’s ‘holocaust’ section). I stood by the sound desk and saw staff from the SFX begging for the volume to be lowered, met with firm headshakes. I can’t say it was an entirely pleasant experience, but it was one I’ll never forget, which is what makes it the best.

    1. Tarfton Clax

Yeah, I was outside the venue that day with the girlfriend and i remember the insane Volume. It was like a jet crashing in slow motion over and over again. It was louder than any time I’ve seen Motorhead or the Jesus and Mary Chain, and they play damn loudly.

      1. Wait For It

When you cannot but submit to the overwhelming nature of the experience, given that you can barely think straight due to the sensory overload,it literally was a case of being lost in music.

  20. Birneybau2

    I’ll bite. U2, Popmart, in Landsdowne, 30th August 1997.

Before they went utter, utter sh!te.

  21. James Chimney

The Joshua Trio in the Baggot Inn sometime in the late 80’s. They knew what the little scut was up to!!

  22. Liam Deliverance

‘The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was The Jimmy Cake at the Tivoli around 1996 because it was a smallish gig and it was easy to get up front. The band consisted of around 12 members playing a wonderful variety of instruments including accordion and clarinet. They were described as experimental rock which didn’t mean a whole lot to me at the time plus I had no expectations as to what a band called the “Jimmy Cake” would be like, I thought it was a silly name but was to quickly learn not to judge a book by it’s cover. They played a set with each member giving their all and producing a wonderful experience, your head would be going from one musician to another, songs were 7/8 or minutes long and the audience was left feeling they had seen something special and unique.Have a Jimmy Cake CD somewhere, must have a look for it.

Jimmy Cake from 2002, New Breathe Festival, shown on No Disco, couldnt find a Tivoli vid.

Who were those fellas who fancied themselves? The Walls, was it? I saw them playing in Henry’s (I think) in Cork a very long time ago and the lead singer had a wind machine (ie fan) in front of him blowing his hair back so he would look extra sexy. Gas.

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

LMGTFY: it was The Stunning. I should have remembered the name as that was what they thought they looked.

  24. Fiach

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was__ Scullion at O’Flaherty Theatre UCG 1981 because of the sheer passion, talent and pleasure in performance that was so obvious from each of the members of the group. They had just released Balance and Control, so some of the songs were new to me, and each one blew my young mind.
Sitting in the front row, I was agog at the veins in Philip King’s neck pulsating through the tragedy of ’18’, the energy of ‘Tension’ and the fun of ‘Can I have my Money back’ by Gerry Rafferty. The sheer range of emotions from the whole group was enthralling.
Greg Bolan’s fingers flying all over the frets, and Sonny Condell’s quirky comments all helped to make this my favourite gig by any group ever.

  25. Frilly Keane

    I know I’m too late
    But sur
    Wha’ harm
Hot Press Battle of the Bands thing in Henrys
    88’ish
    A Nordie Crowd called Trenchtown
That lead singer would have given Thatcher an orgasm

I know they came 2nd in their heat so didnt progress
    If anyone has a clue
Please let me know what happened to them

    Anyway around the same time
    Like that same year
An Emotional Fish, Trinity Ball – Arts Block
Incredible, and probably one of their very early gigs
    Also the support that night
    Cypress Mine
Who had a great track : Suger Beet God
Zig and Zag used ta’ sing it
    Anyway
    All long forgotten

    Pity about Trenchtown
    We missed out

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever winessed was, The Pogues in The Brixton Academy, many a time when they did their December gigs there. As far as I know they still play there each December.

  27. petey

The best live performance from an Irish act I have ever witnessed was A Couple of Blackguards, being Malachi and Frank McCourt. It was a stage play out of which Angela’s Ashes was later written.
