The impressive ouevre of Sutherland Macdonald, Britain’s first professional tattoo artist.
Having first encountered the art in the 1880s during his time in the army, Macdonald set up his parlour at the Hamam Turkish Baths at 76 Jermyn Street in London in 1889.
For the next four years, it was the only place a chep (or a doughty gel) could get properly inked-up anywhere in Blighty.

If doughty gels were allowed into a Turkish bath on Jermyn Street in 1890, I’ll eat my top hat.
As hideous then as they are now
I kinda dig the Japanese fishing scene
Photo No. 3 is appealing. No, I have no tattoos, nor will I ever have one.
As a footnote, I will say that I have visited a Hammam on more than one occasion. I tell you us Irish and Brits have no clue of hygiene – those lads will scrup three layers of skin off you before they are even remotely satisfied! :-D
It’s great
Makes you feel like a kid again been given a good scrubbing and led around by the hand
Yep, they’re the business.
*scrub, rather than scrup, of course. An edit function would be a boon, gents.
I thought there’d be more “tattoos are great”, “tattoos are awful” chat to be honest.
Which side of your argument do you come down on, Bert?
To each their own.
I don’t have any and I’m glad I never got one (my granddad had one and asked us all never to get one) but if other people like them that’s their own taste.
